Dead Battery!

Postby Marie » Tue Nov 13, 2007 11:47 am

Quite the drama yesterday after work!
Turns out I left my head light's on all day finished work at 5 to notice my central locking wouldn't work took a few min's for it to sink in what I'd actually done! It was lifeless not a single light came on when I put in the key! Luckly my friend Chris was passing and he came to my rescue! :smt058
Charged my battery off his car and got it going! It was tricky getting home tho it kept cutting out every time I slowed down? & in bumper to bumper traffic it wasn't good! Got home anyway and took the battery out and charged it!

Any way moral of the story! How did I manage to leave my lights on? Usually the car will beep if you let ur light's on or if you go to get out of the car with your key's still in?
Tested it this mornig then left the light's on opened the door with the key's still in! NO beep? :?: Prob just a fuse ya?

meh!

that's somewhat odd - could be a fuse..does your interiour light come on when you open the door? If not it could be the switch in the door..

Might be time to buy a new battery. In my experience modern batteries don't like to be drained completely like that and it will probably give you more hassle now.

Actually the battery clock? What stage should that be on when the battery is fully charged? :?:

Hehe, that's very odd gfalls because a friend's mechanic told us the opposite! And not to sell him another one either - he already had one - it was just his explaination for what had happened.

He's had to replace two batteries in his mini because they fully discharged and wouldn't hold charge properly afterwards.

There's your answer. the lights on reminder works off the drivers side switch, if the drivers door isn't detected as being open, the buzzer won't go off.
Probably caused by the door being closed on the seatbelt.
Opening the passenger door shouldn't normally cause the lights on buzzer to go off.

Also, the tiny FTO standard battery drains down very quickly.

Yes it sure does! Like when I looked at the clock the battery had stopped at 9:50? I start work at 8:30 like so that's what an hour & 20min's?

I've replaced the orginal battery with the largest one I could find in Halfords - mind you the bracket needed some modification to fit afterwards.. (I hit it repeatedly with a hammer!)

Marie - you might want to get your other half to have a look at that switch when he gets a chance - it's very easy to forget to turn off the lights if the buzzer isn't there to remind you..

Hope your flu clears soon - was under for 5 days myself - pure nasty.

Yep, sounds like the door switch alright. Unscrew it and clean it. Its the black little button thats on the door sil.

The FTO is notorious for having an underpowered battery. Get as big a battery as will fit in the battery tray if your changing it.

universal battery clamps are available in Halfords for around 15 quid. gives you more freedom when picking the new battery and looks neater than the original part
