I've had both and i'd go 17 every time. The 18's on my old one looked class but the ride was crashy and it would get skittish mid-bend if there were any imperfections on the road.
I was also paraoid about potholes and kerbs. Added to that the tyres (think they were 215/35) were ridiculously expensive.

Get some 17's with 215/45 tyres and get it lowered.

Good advice, 18's kill the ride on an FTO in my experience.

bigger wheels won't make your ride look cooler or lower .
buy yourself a pair of APex lowering springs ( there is a guide on the forum how to fit them yourself and save the labour) then get a decent set of 17 with the tyres that Colm suggested.

If you have a bit to spend on her now it's the time to change drop-links/bushes .
good luck
