Postby MR. FTO GR » Wed Jun 25, 2008 4:53 pm

Hi all,

When i brought my car the owner said the cam belt had been changed at 53k (i think) but he had no proof, so was thinking of getting it done for piece of mind

How much does this cost approx? having had a pulsar beofre for 5years its was chain driven so never needed to get one done :?

Also was thinking of giving it a bit of service for piece of mind too, what is needed?

Oil filter / oil
Gearbox filter / fluid

Any other things i should look at?

Thanks all

Dont think the Labour cost involved above is extremely high, bear in mind the amount of work that has been done. Just to do the prear plugs you have to remove the inlet manifold.

I got a quote from Paul Nolan of about €400 for water pump + cambelt depending on the cost of parts...

€300 of that is labour I reckon. So €200 to change plugs, oil, AT Fluid, drain and fill coolant etc is not out of the way. ANd rocker cover gaskets

No I didnt consider the labour high but in general the whole quote came in as high, cause of the amount of stuff done, I told them what I wanted done and to ring me if they came across something else that needed doing as I wouldnt be paying for it if it was just slapped on the bill without me being notified first and agreeing to it as it does happen that fellas will say they came across a damaged something or other and you never get a say in it just a bill. But to be fair they were pretty good and I would use them again, from your country Steelroe actually, in Barraduff near Killarney.

As a general rule I would stay well clear of main dealers expecially when it comes to parts. Labour cost is good but the parts are very expensive.
What did the final bill come to. I am too lazy to add it all up.

Thats not too bad actually for a Mitsi dealer there is a lot of work there imo

I can do the atf oil and filter, engine oil and filter ..... and thats about it lol and will get the timing / cam belts done at the dealer i think & maybe source parts elsewhere too (as steelroe said)

Im gonna phone around tomorrow / friday, will let you know of the prices i get.

Thanks all for giving me guidance (sp) with this 8)

I didnt have engine oil or filter included in that cause I done them myself the week before, the tranmission oil and filter was done though. I was considering getting parts myself and seeing if the dealer would install them for me but prob not a great idea to do that. Like bringing a bottle of beer to a pub and asking the barperson to pour it for you.
And on top of all the work they checked over the whole car as well regarding brakes and pads, underbody, all the usuals so thats in the price somewhere too.

Expensive is right €35.88 for an oil filter, I usually buy mine form the mitsi dealer and they're about €15 each.
P/S belt - 80.78  again these are about €15 each. Did they just pluck these prices out of the air. They seem to have no bearing on real prices?
