FTO for spares?

Postby padidas » Wed May 06, 2009 7:31 pm

Well lads and lasses....

Its been a good year for myself, loved my 96 GR to bits, BUT unfortunately for me.... I was driving it home from work about 3 weeks ago, and started to hear the dreaded loud tapping noise.....

Pulled over popped the bonnet and the Main Crank Shaft Pulley was wobbling all over the place! I couldnt believe it.... knew that it wasnt going to be something simple knowing my luck....

Drove it straight to my mechanic, he heard it and thought it was the big end bearngs being shot. But that it also could just be the pulley itself... I replaced the Pulley with a brand new one from Camskill, and replaced the hydraulic cam belt tensioner while i was at it....

After the car warms up... the pulley still moved, after being Machine Gunned on! His diagnosis after looking more closely at it was that the cars Main Bearings and Big End Shell Bearings need to be replaced... He's WAY too busy to do it... and frankly I dont know if I can afford it from what im hearing...

SO...... I'm debating the idea of selling the car off for parts... Not sure who'd want it... and to be honest, just putting it out there to see what everyone thinks?

Anyone know anywhere that could do the job for me for less than a hundred Million euro? I've rang IVI engines to even see about a replacement, but they never got back to me... so i'm trying again tomorrow...

I am a VERY sad Pad.... :(

Feedback welcome and appreciated...

Thanks.
Pad.

Id like not to, to be honest, if I do get the engine sorted, I'd love to see the car go to a good home! Bodywork wise she's in great nick, interior is spot on too... If I could sort the engine I'd be VERY tempted to keep it... its just that the insurance is killing me, and my job isnt secure... :(

So selling up is fast becoming the only option...

Thanks Seb. you're probably one of the few who's seen it I guess? I never really had time on weekends to head to the meets im afraid...

Yeah I know.. its the worst time that I could ever be trying to sell it... and im SERIOUSLY tempted to keep it once I get it sorted.....

What would a 96 GR manual be going for these days anyway? I would have been hoping to get something above 2k?

mine is up for sale for 1.6 k nctd and all since december... , not as good looking as yours .
there's a 1.8 on the site giung for 1.3k

there's another Gr going for 2 k . all fully working cars.

I'd reconsider the idea of selling the car as is .

damaged FTO's only worth penneys that's the sad reality

Sorry to hear that! Talk to Ricerocket, he tends to have replacement engines available, see what kind of money he charges for them these days.

Actually......................

been toying with the idea of keeping it if I can get a Mi-vec engine?

Anyone know if these will fit the standard GR Bay? Anyone any expeirience in doing this?

My insurance will stay exactly the same, and if im spending a fortune on a car that I wont make any money back on anyway, I may aswell get the slightly more powerful one (with Adjustable tappets!)

Just buy a GPX. you'll be just as uninsured if you swap an engine as you would be if you insure a GPX as a GR, there\s no difference on the logbook.

Not worth the hassle doing a transplant.

I have no idea how it works to be honest... i've never done this before? Is this what happened to a member before? I was just going on that the quotes were identical when I was getting the GR to when I was getting the GPX....

Is there no way of keeping your car going once this happens or is it standard procedure to scrap and buy a new car?

I'm really just confused by the whole thing altogether..... :?

Do insurance companies not recognise engine transplants? I thought if i rang them and told them what I was doing it would be ok?

They do, but you're talking about insuring it as a GPX? If so it shouldn't be an issue.

Insuring a GR with a GPX engine as a GR would be dodgy,

Declaring a GR with a GPX engine would probably confuse most companies, some may not even quote you when they hear the car isn't standard.

I also don't think the car is worth 2 grand, even with a new engine. and oodles of NCT.

I know that. that's why i was considering putting it up for spares or something? if I do go down the road of fixing it, i'll need to know how much it would cost before i decide on keeping it or not...

If the cost of fixing is insanely high.. I was going to look into an engine transplant (definitely keeping) or else just giving up and going the spares route....

Ahh yeah I knew that sure.. we all know about lads not declaring what their car ACTUALLY is when they insure it... I never understood why they didnt just pay the extra and ACTUALLY be insured!!! madness!!

You think there'd be confusion issues? I guess all I could do is ring them...

The car is NCT'd till 01/11 and literally everything else on the car is actually quite clean... is around two really too much to ask for a Manual GR with practically a bottom half engine rebuild??

I did an engine transplant on my GPX and it was a female dog of a job, but mostly because of the lack of equipment. It is very doable with a bit of time and hard work. I'm jut not sure how much you'd need to swap out going from GR to GPX though.

I'm sure you'll need a new ECU. I'm not sure if the gerarbox is interchangable? The exhuast is different. So is the intake for that matter. If the car was worth 10 grand it would be worth while but honestly I can't see how you'd be saving money this way.

Did you do the work yourself?

I rang up IVI engines there earlier on and they're supposed to be getting back to me about the a replacement engine with fitting tomorrow morning....

anyone any experience?

More importantly... Anyone any Idea on how much the whole thing would usually cost? even a complete ball park figure????

Rory has a VR4 he's breaking for parts, if you're getting a new engine anyway, why not go for a nutter?

They used to advertise in the Sun/Star (they still might not sure) and I'm not 100% sure on the price but iirc it was in and around €1000. That was for a fully reconditioned engine and fitting afaik.
A mate of mine had to get an engine for a turbo starlet a few years back. He didn't have any problems with the engine they fitted. I cant reccomend them myself as I have never dealt with them, but he was happy with they're work. Hope that helps.

Would you believe it...

Apparently there's nothing wrong with the big ends... the garage I left it down to, have given it a proper thorough look over, and they believe its the replacement pulley from camskill thats a few milimeter's off...

The 'wobble' is considerably less than it was before..

They gave me a receipt stating what was done, (have it somewhere) giving the car a clean bill of health...

only problem now is the insurance that I dont think I can afford. So the car is officially up for sale and open to anyone who wants to have a look at it..

I'll take some pics and post them all up, basic spec is that its a GR Manual with 195,000 KM's on the clock, in (what seems to be a custom) wine colour, havent seen one with that colour around ever.

Body work is spot on, only one impression dent about the size of a two euro coin on the rear d/s wing and the usual stone chips on the bumper... 17 inch alloys. Alpine Phantom Face head unit. (hides itself when key is removed from ignition. All electrics work perfectly, and air con is blowing lovely and cold. Tappets were changed about 6000 km ago.

Gearbox and clutch all good... and interior spot on too.....

im asking 2.750euro on the market, (as im in no rush to get rid of it) but will accept 2,500 ono.

pics will follow when I have time.

thanks lads.
