Power steering issue

Postby CJ » Mon Jul 18, 2005 12:07 pm

I was coming up the N4 on Saturday evening when I suddenly lost power steering and acceleration while coming up a hill, I managed to pull in and check her out. No noticable under-bonnet issues, when I fired her up again, it was fine. Beforehand, I was fairly motoring in that I wasn't sparing the horses, so to speak, I had the aircon on full blast at the time. I thought it strange that both power steering and engine power would be affected at the same time, fuel pump or filter maybe? My PS fluid is at the min level (note to self: fill 'er up!), that said, the minimum level should be sufficient to oil the pump etc. There have been a few instances over the past couple of weeks were I've noticed the PS being a bit tight when parking up.

Any thoughts guys?

CJ any chance you just stalled for a couple of seconds (changing down gear - aircon on full)- my wifes car (too embarrased to say what it is  ) sometimes just intantly loses power steering and accellerations (happens mostly when turning a bend changing down gears) and it picks up straight away as the momentum 'kick starts' it again, but it took us a while to work out that it was actually stalling (the last thing you do when you lose power steering going round a bend is look at the rev counter!!!!!!!! )
It transpires it a sensor that need replacing.

Quite possibly JD, I had the sounds thumpng at the time and couldn't hear the engine. I reckon that the aircon is the culprit myself, I'm just not sure how :?

CJ,
Heres my handyman explanation that I dreamed up! As you know the power steering and a/c systems are driven off the same belt.
If for instance the a/c gas was running low, I'd expect this to put extra load on the compressor -this would have a greater effect if the a/c was at the max. I expect there to be a finite amount of drive available from the p/s a/c belt. With the a/c system taking the lions share of the power this leaves less available to the p/s system. Just a thought! It may not be the a/c requiring regassing though, perhaps the compressor is acting up -running inefficiently and drawing more load than it should.
If it's not that then I'd say it's definitely the flux capacitor

Good thought Mustang, where I not in a line of fast moving traffic at the time, I would have switched the a/c off rather than panicing! Theres been no reoccurance since, if it happens again, I'll switch the a/c off to see if it has an impact.

Good question Dean -CJ was only just earlier cursing his speed limiter :!:
That said the flux capacitor looks to be in good nick. One of the rare 'shotgun' models if I am not mistaken :!:

No, Pops tends to prefer the 'Cuchullan' approach in terms of threathening prospective son-in-laws into wedlock, it involves the a bucket of sliotars and a keepers hurl, 'nuff said.

Anyhow, the model of FC I have is first gen and lacks some of the functionality of latter day devices, you can pick 'em up cheaply enough on ebay
