tappets adjustment

Postby Mitsumaniac » Thu Dec 03, 2009 3:59 pm

Lads,
I need to adjust the tappets on mine but have a question...
What values should they have for intake and exhaust? Tried to fing something but with no luck. :(
Thanks in advance

Its a good question, there are guides on the forum for replacing GR\GX tappets but not adjusting them on MIVEC equiped engines. I always assumed it was a case of taking them out, cleaning them and fitting them back in tightly (but I've never done the job so can't confirm).

I'd get a set of feeler gauges and a spanner and a scredriver and adjust them yourself. Two people make the job quite handy.

Intake is .1mm and exhaust is .13mm.

I think I found an answer to my question :D
Found another thread on FTOOC http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=83822&highlight=adjustment+tappets
The same values in both threads can`t be a mistake :)

Muad, 200quid?
I asked 2 mechanics and they quoted me from 85 to 100 quid for this job.
Yes, it`s very annoying when I hear this noise... I`m starting to feel like i`m driving some rubbish 93 fiesta or anything like that. Such a nice looking car has to sound perfect 8) it`s just not right if I hear engine noises instead of exhaust
and taking under consideration that the weather is crap i`ll give it to the mechanic, just want to make sure they`ll do it right and after the job is done i`ll ask what gaps they were leaving for intake and exhaust :smt002

u need the tappet adjustment tool to do it properly.(bought it for 40quid in ftooc) I did it a year ago. engine was silent after it for about 2 or 3 weeks, then the noise returned a bit. wouldn't bother doing it again.

Gotta get my eyes checked, I totally saw another word there when I read it first!!

McGon I was thinking of doing mine at some stage in the future, they're a bit loud but not that bad as to be a total distraction, how long does it take to do? When you say its not worth it as it lasted only a few weeks was it that they werent fully adjusted properly that they went back to the way they were?

I thought the only thing the tappet adjustment tool did was lossen the valve lock nut so you can adjust the gap with a screw driver? It makes it easier, but I wouldn't say it's essential.

no they were done properly and tightened properly but the tappet noise came back in after a thousand km or so. I did a lot of research after that happened and apparently its normal enough. you cannot keep them silent. all you can do is make sure they are gapped right and adjusted properly.

If I remember correctly the custom made tool was essential to do the job. Only way to hold the nut tight while tightening/loosening the screw at the same time?! if you turn the screw without holding the nut, then both will turn. the tool allows you to hold the but and adjust the screw because it has a side cut out of it so the cam doesn't have to be removed?
maybe it can be done without? not sure though.

Could a spanner not hold the nut?

yeah I suppose. you'd wonder why they even custom made a tool for it when a spanner works just fine?

edit: here, I dug up this pic I took during the process. I seem to recall it was difficult (if not impossible) to get a spanner down under the cam to hold the nut while simultaneously adjusting the screw with a screwdriver. (might of just been me doing it arseways though). If you use a socket to hold the nut it won't fit down because of the cam. you need a hollow socket with a chunk cut out of it. sure try the spanner and let us know if it works. you can probably rig something up handy enough.

Hmmm yeah, that looks a little like it's going to be awkward. Well sure I'll find out when I go to do it.

i think someone on here custom made (or posted a picture of) a spanner that was cut at the head and welded onyto the broken arm at 90 degree angle. did the job fine. :)

The howto on the FTOOC forum does it with just a spanner so I'll follow their guide and see how I get on.

the top of the "socket tool" is actually hexagonal so you can put a spanner on it, while putting a screwdriver down the middle of it to adjust the screw.
