Won't start, battery ok: Reset ECU

Postby deepseadcs » Mon Feb 06, 2006 3:33 am

Yesterday my gpx didn't start. I was on Underground parking area near grafton. The security personnel provided me a portable engine starter but didn't work, and then we tried jump start from his co workers car but still didn't work, he told me to call for AA or mechanics... This Never been happen to me, all work by jump start because I left the car lights On, but yesterday was different, all Electronics was close... So I decided to lift the front and check for the starter cable, and then my last option like evryone in terms of technicality will do is to restart or reset, so I reset the ECU.... and then it started :smt041 tried turning on & off its ok.

Any Idea or experiece like this, Do i need to replace something or just coincidence? [sorry for the long story]....thanks

Won't start again yesterday, so I finally decided to removed the starter motor, disassembled and found bits of metal causing the gear to stockup. I think this bits of metal came from AT gear box when it broke down last May making a hole on it and lots of bits metal.

Now it's working perfectly atleast those metal bits didn't damaged my starter motor.

You mentioned earlier that resetting the ECU helped... check to see if the ECU is reporting any error codes. Maybe the earlier error came back again?

Having said that, repeatedly whacking the starter with a hammer can't have done it much good... :?

Leaving the car idle for a while might drain the battery though, any way you could try another one?

The battery is brand new 12v reading on voltmeter with or without light while starting and the light doesn't dim when I turned the ignition. I only hear a noise from engine I think from Idle motor and humming sound.

i will check again tomorrow might be alarm, mpi fuse, battery connection etc....

sounds to me like the starter motor could be getting stuck - I had a similar problem on my old 205 gti - starter motor would stick and hitting it with a lump of wood would free it up and it would work then - but this will only work for so long before you need a new starter motor.....

When you attempt to start it does anything happen? Do you get any noises? My 205 used to make a whirring sounds like the starter was trying to turn but just couldn't.....

I second this - those are the exact symptoms I had with my old 626..

Found that there are two types of starter motor the fat one found on 16valve FTO's part no. MD301348 and the slim type which found on all V6 FTO's part no. MD320576.
Everyone is correct mine has starter motor problem disassembled again my starter motor and found that the brush( 8 & 7 ) are all worn thus not touching the Armature( 10 ) surface the reason why it won't work,
I thought it was ECU, Ignition sensor or something which makes me nut...

anyway thank you all for the info :)
