Emissions were fine but...

Postby Bernard » Fri Jan 18, 2008 6:51 pm

... I had a worn inner tie rod end.
I suppose it's better to fail for something that's easily fixed but I was hoping to pass first time.
Still, now I get to give the government an extra few quid

Can someone confirm that this is the right bit to order?

tie road end \ track rod end - same thing alright. Stick the wheel on full lock and use your hand to rock the TRE from side to side, if its on the way out, it will move quite easily. I've replaced them on my own GPX for preventative maintanence purposes, they tend to go after a while which in turn makes for sloppy steering.

I've replaced both on my car as well. Bought them from one of the local shops. Paid 40E for 2 of them which is cheaper than online. They are used on other mitsi models like colt 94-98

Failed my retest today
I was told that I hadn't changed the part... when I said that I had I was brought over to the car and shown the part in question.

The inner tie rod end is what I was told the first time and what was on the report but looking at the part it's what the track rod end joins onto :?

Could someone shed some light on this, I'm going to have to do a full retest now

I'd say that's it alright, I presume I'd be better off changing both sides (and gaitors) while I'm at it...

I'll try and get some pictures up later, just to be safe

EDIT:
Here's the pic...

A bit OT perhaps but the wife's car (1.4 escort) had the NCT the same day as my retest and I was comparing the reports.

I drove the sh!t out of the FTO for the 20 miles to the test,
I never got into 5th gear and left the engine running for the 10 minutes wait before the test still the engine temp. was only 69°.
Whereas the escort had a temp of 104° after an easy drive in and being turned off for twenty minutes...
Is it just that the FTO has a fitter engine?

:smt041 :smt041 Passed today :smt041 :smt041

The inside of my rear tyres were worn but according to the tester they had to pass it.
Apparently they only measure 1/4 of an inch each side of centre. Interesting to note...
