There are loads of online guides to replacing CV joints, this one is good:

I know there's a knowledge base, but I use another site that has a "How To" section, it gives a full step by step guide on everything from changing pads to taking the engine out, would it be easier to set this up so people can just go straight to that forum?

thanks for the help.got underneath on sat and found that the big clip around the rubber cover had come off.cant seem to figure out how to tighten it again.there is 3 pins sticking up from it and one ends just clips onto this.where would i tighten it.and also there seems to be a bit of grease left on the joint but how much should be on it and should i fill it up before i put it back on.what type should i put in to it :smt001 :smt001 :smt001

Go to your local motor factor and ask for a c.v. boot clip, should be a stainlees steel strap kinda like a cable tie. you will be able to get appropriate grease there too they will be able to advise you

Are you sure the knocking is being caused by the cv joint ? Was the joint completely dry when you replaced the clip? when a cv is knackered usually makes more like a clicking sound when your turning. You'd maybe be aswell to get it checked out by a mechanic.

When you get a new cv joint they normally come in a kit with a new rubber boot and a little sachet of grease and clips
