Oh drear, I've bought.....

...an Astra.

I had been contemplating the FTO, but the running costs recurring made me see sense eventually.

I'm not, however falling for the fools paradise of the 1.4 and I found a nice 01 1.6 Comfort with only 25k on the clock and FSH. It's a hatchback and navy, as I can't stand the look of the saloon Astra...looks like there was no thought put into it. It has the exact same interior spec as the Corsa I have and is only 1 year newer, but has 75k less on the clock!!!

Price to be negotiated on Monday, buying from my uncle so I'm not going to leave him off lightly :D :D

but not worth having within my budget....at least the Astra is 10 times faster than what I have. If it was a 1.4 I would have walked away.

Oh dear is right!

You've just gone and bought a car like I'd buy a fridge or a cooker.

You should have bought something a little more exciting if you are interested in cars - if it was proving costly to run then just sell it on. If you were considering an FTO then why jump to an Astra - there are plenty of interesting cars to be had at 01 Astra money with not much more in the way of running costs. Even a warm or hot hatch like a Clio 172 or Civic VTI would be a far better bet from a driving viewpoint.

Well, I had worked out the cost of this year's insurance and tax, and purchase. Just that by the time the bill were taken care of, all I'd get was a wreck on wheels.

I'm fine Colm. the Acceleration of the Astra was better than the GS I drove a few weeks back. There's a higher spec 1.4 for sale, but I want the thing to move off at roundabouts. Plus the mother doesn't want my car, so trading in is the easiest....can't be doing with the hassle of trying to sell an 8 year old 1l car in a fallin insurance market. Anything under 1.4 is now praqctically redundant in insurance terms.

I don't reckon I'll keep it too long, but I'll have it paid for before I go back to college.

1.0l is still king in the used market. don't be afraid to sell it.

Well let me start by saying congrads, well done on getting a new car!!! :smt041
However being a owner previously of an opel astra this is my knowledge, they are infact a lovely car to drive the handle very well, very easy to drive, ideal almost for a first time driver, but if you were interested in an FTO I really don't see the astra as the next best thing? I had an astra coupe so granted it was a sports car (semi), it gave me nothing but hassel  mine was a 04, the pistons in the engine kept sticking  kept having to bring it back to the garage to get repaired, the timing belt has to be done at the excat time it's due not a mile over! Otherwise it can be very messy! :x bad memories don't ask! I bought the car in 05 so it wasn't even a year old, in total I had the car for 55days, then I went to get my money back!!!

It's a 1l 8 year old with 100k, a clutch due for replacement and it had to be driven REALLY hard to pass the NCT emissions 2 years ago. I got €2400 for it, when coupled with a new clutch, gearbox and other niggly bits like another AFM comes to around €3k+ all in all. I'm just glad it won't be sitting on the driveway. Still, a more solid car than the mammy and daddy's 06 Yaris though. I'll be sad to see it go, had considered fixing it up fully, but I'd get zilch back for it come selling up time.

1l was a massive deal up to 12-18 months ago, now insurace companies are getting more competitive, so it's not that big a deal and people are going for 1.4.
