Normal and mad idea...

Postby optical illusion » Thu May 08, 2008 10:57 pm

Okay folks, do you think going to england to get a car would be worth it, esp. now with the sterling being so crap? I'm sooo lazy though...

Now here's the MAAAAAAD suggestion.

You realise by now that I'm obsessed with black FTO's. There aren't many floating around Ireland for sale at the mo. The blacks are always more expensive too.

How mad would it be to buy another colour (as they are nearly always cheaper) and get it properly resprayed black? Would it dilute? Look crap? Fade eventually? Chip and show the red/white/whatever underneath? How much do you reckon it would cost (a proper job now)

Just a mad idea I'm throwing out there. Feel free to slap me if needed

I went to England to buy my car, was over and back in one day.
I think CJ did the same with the rex, once you do all the usual checks beforehand it's ok.

As for respraying, I wouldn't advise it.
A decent respray will cost a packet, money that could have gone toward a better FTO...

You'd surely get a better FTO by spending and extra grand or two on it.

Check piston heads if you want to get one from England.
Or there's two nice version Rs on carzone at the moment.
It depends on your budget

There is no way I'd pay that much for the one in Mayo  , the other one yes. By the time I have the money put together that'll be well gone though.

Nothing nice in manual on PH or autotrader at the mo either

Hold out for the right one - respraying is expensive & time consuming.
Like the lads mentioned importing from the UK or NI could be an option.

Check this site:
http://www.usedcarsni.com/

Just now there's only 3 on there - but last I looked there was WAY more.

Also here:

Just found this one as well:

If you really want a "fixer-upper" - this puppy is going REALLY CHEAP, but you need to hurry..

Yeah DON'T buy a cheap one. Mine wasn't cheap but I rushed into buying one and while I don't regret it really (love the car) it has hit me in the pocket and will continue to do so for a while.

I'm with the lads on this and I speak from experience. I was on a tight enough budget because I was impatient to buy. Bought a 95 black manual GPX (rare) :D for 3000.

Mistake. I have spent almost another 1000 on repairs and essential upgrades and going to be spending at least another 500 in the coming weeks on rust and welding repairs. You would get a pretty decent FTO for 5 grand instead of a cheap one that will cost you the same if not more.

I love the car and it's been an experience fixing it and getting to know it but I would hold out if I was buying again.

get one in the uk alright, I've done this very recently, works out a lot cheaper and it will only cost you about €30 for flights and maybe €100 for a ferry home! fly out at seven in the morning and be back in Dublin for 5 in the evening...

Black is fab on the FTO and I spent ages searching for a good one, It's one of the few cars that looks well in black and also white..
http://picasaweb.google.com/MarkRussellHill/FTOForSale

DO NOT buy one and spray it black unless you are willing to pull out the engine and spray the engine bay black too, plus boot. Big bucks, 3k at least?
