Here we go with the clay bar

Postby soc » Wed Aug 31, 2005 3:44 pm

Just took delivery of a Swissol claybar. Got it from a guy on the uk golf gti forum - highly recommended by other forum members. Gonna give it a try out over the next few days. I'll try to remember to do some before and after shots and post so people can see if it makes a difference.

Now I just gotta find out how to use the damn thing properly

There is a mag on the shelves at the mo that goes through using a claybar - can't remember which title though - its probably Jtuner or Performance Jap or Banzai.

Got some basic instructions from ukmkivs.net -

1. wash car
2. fill a plant sprayer with water to use to keep paint surface lubricated
3. cut claybar into smaller pieces (5 for the swissol)
4. soften claybar in some warm water
5. spray paint and with claybar in palm of hand rub in straight lines across paint
6. work in approx 3 sq/ft areas
7. after finished you can wash car again
8. polish car
9. wax car

gonna give it a try either tomorrow evening or saturday evening :)

sweet, I'm gonna have a go this evening. I plan on washing, claybarring, washing, polishing and then waxing. Wonder how long it'll take me!

i spend about an hour just claybaring the roof, take ur time to work on about a square foot at a time, if ur not getting the result you hoped, dont worry, move on to next part, return to this at the end and you'll find the contaminant will have loosened this time, BE PATIENT, result are well worth the wait.

then polish and shine, i always used AUTOGYLM POLISH RESIN, it rained an hour later  and the water just sheeted off the roof :D

I spent nearly 3 hours on the car yesterday, wash, claybar, buff, polish and then wax.

All I can say is BRILLIANT!! After using the claybar the paintwork came up glass smooth. Every tarmark (most of which had been there for ages cause I couldn't get them off) were removed with ease. After polishing and waxing the shine was glass like and really deep.

The really cool thing is that when you're using the claybar it appears like it's doing nothing until you hit a tar mark - then after a few rubs you can see it start to disappear - a few more rubs and hey presto no more tar mark!

I can heartily recommend a claybar to anyone who wants a smooth, glassy and deep shine :)

I'll post some pictures later..

Does look a nice job alright... let us know how long it lasts, if its a reasonable length of time I'd be tempted to give it a go myself!

From what I've read you only need to claybar about 3 - 4 times a year as the crap (road salts, tar, etc) builds up on the paint work. I didn't do the roof (cause I was pressed for time) so it's a really cool way of letting people see/feel the difference ;) I'll probably do mine again in about 2 weeks time cause I'm thinking of having it machine polished before I decide if I want to get some scratches touched up - it really is amazing - way better than I was expecting.
