Head gasket???

Postby trotgtt » Mon Nov 19, 2007 3:56 pm

First off, hello everyone 1st post...... I went to look at a 98 gpx today, and found some milky white residue under the oil cap! dose this mean the head gasket has gone??

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Trotgtt, welcome here.

Milky white residue means that the engine has either been sniffing cocaine or the head gasket is leaking. Either way you should get a mechanic to look at it or just leave it and go look at another one (FTO).

Where is the car and what reg is it - is it on carzone???

It may not be a head gasket, small amounts could be caused by the car not being taken on long enough journies. Get a mechanic to check the cooling system out.

Welcome to the fourm :-)

If you're really keen - get it checked over by a mechanic ..

If you're not overly bothered just walk away - if there is a leak it's probably not going to be a 20e repair job..

Don't rush into it. If you've any doubts at all about the car walk away... there are plenty of others. The last thing you want to do is drive home in your brand new car already worrying about something possibly being wrong with it.

I think one of the tests for head gasket is to start the car with the radiator cap off. If there is a problem water will hose out the top at pressure.

There is nothing wrong if there is an initial flow of water out the top like a mini volcano for a few mins, this will ease off and then should stop overflowing altogether after a minute or two.

Had the car booked in to eurospec on sat, no head gasket problems and mark gave her a service and a clean bill of health, Picked her up last night for a 50 mile journey home.... didn't miss a beat! Very happy :D
