Instrument binnacle template

Postby CJ » Fri Nov 25, 2005 8:37 pm

I'm looking for an idea on how to get a decent template of the instrument binnacle (speedo\tacho etc), I've bought some carbon fibre adhesive backed sheeting that I want to stick in there (might not be to everones taste but I 've already got the CF effect on the steering wheel centre and tip gearstick and its looks well IMO). I don't have one of the stainless steel dash panels handy, any suggestions on how to get a good template?

Heres the sheeting by the way:

I'd be interested to see how this works out - if carbon sheet is good I'd be interested in some for possible use to cover the horrible wood trim on the gti/

Huge thanks to Jon from http://www.jonlicence.com/ for supplying this template:

Image

Note: The pic is bigger than A4 size, in order to print to scale, I set the print job to 'banner' and stuck to pages together with sellotape (lenght-ways).

EDIT: I've been informed this is not a perfect fit and may need trimming down (the holes are in the right place apparently, its just that some of the edges may need to be trimmed down)make a cardboard template first before doing any work.

I got the CF sheet the other day, I was surprised that it was so thick though and thought that I might have problems cutting it. Another thing that surprised me is that its actually contains real CF. Anyway, I got to work with Jons template, I used sellotape on the rear of the template to ensure it wouldn't tear when I was doing the cutting and then used more tape to stick the template to the sheet. The smaller holes are really awkward, don't attempt this with a hangover! It took about 45mins of steady cutting to finish, I ended up cutting slivers off at various points to get it to fit correctly on the binnacle. Anyway, I reckon it turned out really well and it sets the dash off nicely. The dash now matches the CF pattern on the steering wheel and tip gear leaver, check out the pics below:

Any chance you've got some of that CF sheet left? I'd love to see what it's like in the flesh before ordering as I'd definitely consider it to cover up the horrible wood trim in the gti.

I've a couple of small sections left, as you can see from the template pic above, it was pretty tight to begin with.

This sheeting is quite think (~1.5mm) and wouldn't fit around curved surfaces too well, as long as the dash is flat (which most dashes aren't!), you would be OK.

that tip cover is rotton. The workmanship around the lever cut out looks poor.
You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine'.

Nice!

Keeping an eye on the carbon fibre stuff buys coming up on ftooc... door cups are first up, think it'd be a good way of sprucing up the interior while still keeping it subtle.
