knocking on front end

Postby alloywheelsinternational » Tue Sep 13, 2005 12:34 am

can anyone help.
i have a knocking noise coming from the front of the car.
i have read on the forum that it could be anti roll bushes is this correct?
the reason i am asking is that i fitted stabiliser links last nite and it is still knocking.
i went to my local motor factors and told the this today and they said they didnt list anti roll bar bushes for the FTO?
is he talking crap or can anyone tell me what it is i need?

He probabaly didn't list them, but you can get them alright, Camskill have polyurethane ones, what I put on mine.

definitely sounds like anti-roll bar bushes - www.camskill.co.uk. Should get them in a few days. Worth upgrading to the poly ones too.

ar ethese the correct for a 96 GR?

Yes, FTO supsension is the same across all models AFAIK.

You should ring or email Camskill to be sure as they are VERY helpful and their customer service is 2nd to none!

Ya, I'd have to agree, anytime I've talked to them they've been more than accomodating and helpful.

Yes well the front anti roll bar set up is teh same across the board. There are however some variations on other suspension parts, between models.

It's the fitting that may be expensive as you have to drop the front subframe to get in at the bushes.

Some on the ftooc hvae done this themselves but AFAIK it is a pig of a job which I was quite happy to leave to a mechanic (Paul Nolan to be precise 8) ). I had a few of the other bushes (bottom arm, etc) changed to poly items at the same time cause it didn't cost much extra

I did it myself, but had the availability of a pit to work from, and still had the Xsara to use while the FTO was off the road. Took 2 x 4 hour sessions (2 evening/nights) to get it done.

A more experienced/skilled mechanic (my level is pretty low so that won't take much) would be able to do it a fair bit quicker than that.

Here's something that might come across as extremely silly.

My GF had knocking in the front end of her golf - she was going nuts..

I had quick gander - and it turned out her inner-whell arches (the plasticy ones) were slightly lose..

I managed to tighten them - and everything has been fine since.

It'll take you two seconds to determine if your noise is caused by something similar - simply apply a slight bit of upwards pressure to the innerscreen in the wheel arch - if it moves it could need to be thighter.

Seems very basic I know - worth checking though.

Another 'stoopid' one I heard somewhere was the bit that holds up the bonnet rattling around the place. Its always the small things that are the hardest to find.

This rattled on my last 2 FTO's - v simple fix - attach a piece of padded tape to the offending area (you will see where it has marked the metal) and presto - no rattle.
