Mission Failure

Postby RussMan » Thu Dec 01, 2005 11:56 am

Well mission was a failure..... Putting the 2 hour drive to Blanch behind me... to step out of the car and submerge my foot in about a ten inch deep pothole full of mucky water i was well on my way to getting my cars handling done!! Until well .. i didn't.
The system looked extremely advanced.. took a few photos' which i must post up at some stage.
Anyhoooo .. So the back wheels toe is out by over 1 degree which is bad i've been advised. Unfortunatly to add to that, they can't adjust it as the "bushings" are faulty and need replacing.
I've been onto Paul Nolan and have booked myself in to get these replaced on Wednesday week but need help from you guys before then.

Basically the guy out in McCanns showed me the part that needs replacing, i need to get the part number and order it from Camskills today... Problem is i don't know what part it is!!!

Description of part:
There is a "toe arm" on each back wheel. that sort of bolts onto the chassis towards the rear of the car more so. There is a 12 mm bolt which is used to adjust this arm which adjusts the "toe" i.e pulls it in and out. This appears to be rotten ... well the rubber or whatever it is around it seems to be screwed as the joint which this 12mm bolt goes through drops up and down when the nut is tightend instead of pulling the toe in and out. (Does this make sense)

ALL help appreciated.

Thanks
Russ

Sorry, can't merge posts Russ!

See this thread, you'll need a set of rear inner bottom arm bushes and rear camber bolts. If I were you, I'd consider gettign the rear outer bottom arm bushes and bolts replaced at the same time.

I'm not 100% sure but it sounds like you're talking about either the rear trailing arm bush (diagram below):
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s10p1191

Bushing is here:
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s10p4248

Or else the rear camber bolt (diagram below):
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s10p1343

Or the rear outer arm lower bolt (diagram below):
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s10p1344

Recognise any of this from what you saw up at Dave McCann's?

To be honest though, I'd recommend you just ring Camskill and tell them you're looking for the bushing at the rear for the joint where you adjust toe... they'll probably know exactly what you're talking about...

Theres no adjustment required on rear trailing arm bush, if it goes then you'll just get a knocking sound and the handling will be sloppy (I've a spare set of these if you do need them by the way ;))

Thanks for the information so far... on the appropriate track i think!

http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s10p1191&z=818&PHPSESSID=8a686a15b403daafb5db6a3bca1d311b

On this image there are two main parts.. The largest part ... is this part running parallel to the car itself and not pointing towards the side of the car??Do the two larger pieces link together somehow. If they do it looks like where the smaller of the two large parts would joint there is a 12 mm bolt through there and when adjusted you can visibly see the joint dropping instead of tightening.. does this make sense? If so i'll replace part 41387? CJ what are the other parts you are suggesting replacing? I may as well get them done if i can benefit from this!!

Thanks again

Update:

I have called camskills and jesus does your man i spoke with know his stuff. Must get a heap of calls regarding fto's and this area. Anyhooo he has recommended parts 41306B and 41399b , 2 x camber bolts and 2 x bushes respectively. I've also sent on the picture to Dave McCann to see what he thinks ans will hopefully get him to concur!
CJ do you recommend getting a few other parts while i am at it? i.e while there is a mechanic replacing these parts are there a few other parts in this area that can cuase problems? Getting the car fully serviced at the same time so would like to iron out any near future failures for a while and enjoy my life for a while :D

THANKS :)

Mike in Camskill is probably the best person to talk to with regard to upgrading your suspension. I went at mine in a big way a few months back and it has transformed the car. Not expensive either - esp considering the improvement in handling. Had an issue with my rear trailing arm at the time as well.

I know you had an issue with dampers when you first got the car - do you know what you have on front and back at the moment?

Had lovely coilovers on the front when i got the car which were replaced with OE shocks on front. back remain OE to the best of my knowledge.
I decided to order a heap of parts to tidy of the suspension which i'm compiliing at the moment.

Any suggestions on what to replace?
So far it looks like

* Short-dog bone x 2
* Camber bolts x 2

Based on what CJ replaced i'm wondering if there is much point in replacing these parts as well???

All 4 dampers/shocks ?? Great Discount on these....
Front bottom arm rear bush (extra castor)
Front ARB bushes - I believe i need to find a separate part as the GPVRs ARB is different to the other GPX & GR's????
Rear outer bottom arm bushes - worth replacing? as quite cheap
Rear inner bottom arm bushes - worth replacing? same
Rear camber bolts
Rear outer lower arm bolts

Leave the OE shocks on the front if they have only recently been replaced and maybe stick some KYB's on the back - I can't understand though how there was coilovers on the front and standard dampers on the back ?

Maybe a set of Apex lowering springs could be added to that list - it'll be one of the more noticeable mods you could make both from a looks and performance perspective - I've changed all of the above and more from your list as well and it all really adds up to a much better handling car.

I'd change the shocks for kyb's - biggest single improvement to handling would be to fit better shocks. Fit some Apex lowering springs with these shocks. Then change as many of the bushes as possible to poly ones an the and will be razor sharp.

Ok well firstly thanks for your advise all !!!
I've compiled the following list of replacement / upgrade parts. If anyone is looking for anything over in camskills let me know as you can obviously save on shipping while i'm ordering.... later today!

- Apex lowering spring kit
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... 0s584p2536 is this any better or overkill? too low?

- Camber bolts x 2
- Short-dog bone x 2
- Denso Spark Plugs x 6 (Are these good?)
- Oil filter... just standard.. are there any better ones?
- Front droplinks(gpvr specific) - really need these?
- Rear bushes for dog bone arm.
- With regards to replacing standard shocks to kybs... i don't know what are on the back... any chance you'd have a look soc?

Also got a present on the way of this baby from the gorgeous Sarah
http://www.caraudiodesign.co.uk/product_info.php/pName/falcon-predator-evo4/cName/vehicle-security-full-car-alarm-systems

I'm looking to get it fitted... Has anyone had good experience with anyone? I want all features pretty much.. remote start.. anti-hijack - panic -- windows up(if possible) etc etc etc

I'll buy you guys a beer for the help...:)

I'd say the Tein springs will be very low alright - possibly too low for the back - The FTO looks better with a wedge shaped stance as opposed to looking like you have 2 bags of cement in the boot. I'd go with the Eibachs as an alternative though I find the APEX springs on my FTO to be good quality springs. Difficult to comment on which is better without putting them on the same car.

The Denso Iridiums are class plugs - 60K mile lifespan and they are far better performing plugs than standard - Denso even claim a bhp increase.

I'd be wary of fitting springs this low to standard length shocks - you'd risk the shock bottoming out and they'll surely be under greater than normal pressure and wear a lot quicker.

In general a 30mm drop should be no problem on normal length shocks and I also found the Apex springs to be really good on the GR.... check out my GR after it was lowered on std shocks with the Apex springs....

http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2 ... pic_id=126

- Oil filter... just standard.. are there any better ones?

Not that I've ever heard - and sure there'd be no need really...

- Front droplinks(gpvr specific) - really need these?

I'd get them anyway - very easy job to change them, I did the fronts and rears on my GR outside the house...

- With regards to replacing standard shocks to kybs... i don't know what are on the back... any chance you'd have a look soc?

Yea I could do that - I'm not sure what I could tell to be honest but I have a trolley jack and some axle stands in the house so we could jack it up and have a closer look if you want... knock into the house when you're around next. Btw, you (or sarah) are welcome to use these for any easier jobs that might need doing like changing disks and pads or oil changes..... (or if you ever need a hand just give me a shout).

Thanks... went ahead with order of all mentioned parts including front and rear ARB bushings. My car handles like a trolley at the moment so i'm really looking forward to seeing the improvements... both visually and handling!

and got a nice discount on this.

But if I spend too much more time hanging around your car she probably won't like you much cause I'll only end up coming home with an FTO some night without telling her

Nice - Didn't know Camskill had these in stock. I've been looking for a good twin system for a while now - Hope Santa comes up with the goods this year.

When you get that lot on Russ you will have a savage car.
