Alloy Wheels & Driveability

Postby Diddler » Wed Aug 04, 2004 9:35 am

Guys,

When i purchased my FTO i was informed that i could stick a set of 17" Rims on it without having to change bearings. Is this the biggest size i can put on without modding?

I'm just about to buy my new wheels today and whatever views u got would help!

Thanks

Personally wouldn't go any bigger than 17 - I have 215/17 40 profile on my FTO - but I know that you can put 18's on - some guys have 225/18 35 profile but I'd say this would not be ideal for handling/ride esp as a 35 profile tyre won't give you much leeway when you hit a pothole.

Don't know why you would need to change the bearings though - do you mean wheel spacers for wider tyres?

i've got 18/225/40's on mine. no significan difference in handling, just as long as you get them tracked and aligned properly it should be a problem, only thing is the speedo would be out by about 5% or so.

No the guy in the Mitsi dealership stated that a set of 17" would go on comfortably but if you went any bigger you'd need to replace the bearings??????!!!!! (Me thinks he didn't know his ar$e from his elbow!!)

Best bet would be to wack a set of 215/17/40 then i'd have no problems what so ever!!!!

The Buy & Sell would be a good place to start - probably difficult to get a set that will fit properly though. You'll need to keep the following in mind:
PCD 5 x 114.3 - Offset 35 to 38 (Wouldn't go more than 40) - Centre bore of 67.1 (larger is ok as you could get plastic rings to help with fit) and you won't want more than an 8" rim or you'll be looking for spacers.

Not sure what other cars have similar fitments - maybe an MR2?
