Is it a screeching noise. slipping power steering or alternator belt? Would not be surprising in wet weather conditions.

If you cant pinpoint the noise get it looked at.

Check the condition of your belts for sure - give them a pit of a poke with the engine off..is there a lot of give in them? Any fraying?

If it is the alternator belt, you're probably not going to do much harm driving it. Still, I'd recommend replacing it soon. It's a very quick and easy job and the belt costs less than a packet of cigarettes: http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s9p2694.

If it is that alternator belt be careful. If the belt isn't tight enough to turn the alternator then your backcharge will be diminished. If you find that the battery isn't up to the task in the mornings or the lights are dimming then get that belt done ASAP. More than likely it got wet and is just being a moan.

I often get this moany/whinging sound when I put my foot down as well but it tends to emanate from the front passenger seat.

I get this on first start up in very wet/damp conditions. Lasts for less than a minute. I put it down to damp causing lack of traction on one of the belts (don't know which one). As it stops after 30s - 1 minute, and only occurs in very wet/damp conditions, I don't worry about it.

Tends to be the alternator belt getting damp. Run the engine and sprinkle some talcum powder over the belt (mind the fingers). If it stops its likely to just be a damp belt. If it doesn't then switch off engine and check the tension on the belt - the belt should be able to turn 45 to 60 degrees. If you can twist more than 90 degrees then you probably should tighten the tensioner.

I got hold of a can of "Belt Grip" last week for my supercharger belt and its incredible stuff for stopping belt noise. You can run the belt relatively loose (reduce stress on bearings) without any noise. Simply spray on the belt as its moving. Best 6euro I ever spent.
