new car

Postby godthisyokeisquick » Wed Nov 30, 2005 8:30 pm

hi all, class site, lots of great info, :smt006
just bought an fto last friday. 95 gr auto. Its the best car ive
ever had. my others were volkswagens(enough said)
am a bit worried about it though. is there a recommended mechanic i can get to look at it.
it has no nct. just from reading on the site it looks like it may be a problem. the guy i bought it off guaranteed through the nct. but i fear he may back out. for a start i know the tires are wrecked and the wheels need realigned. but i overlooked this at the time of purchase because of the guarantee. there are a few other rattles and shakes nothing serious (i hope) i have it in writing and its with a dealer, so legally i should be fine.but if it costs too much, i can see him walking away, which would leave me up the creek without a car.
not too sure what to do.

Welcome GTYIQ :)

I see you're in Dublin, if you've any doubts, get it over to Paul Nolan in Artane, he's a good honest mechanic and knows his FTOs well, his no is 086 2649884, he's normally booked up 2 weeks in advance.

Is it driving OK, hows the engine and gearbox feel? Knocking noises from the suspension are common, you'll most likely need to replace the anti-roll bar bushes and droplinks, not a difficult job. Assuming it was a private sale, were did you see the ad, was it advertised online?

Got the car in a Dublin Dealership. i dont want to say which one, cause he
may come good. it was advertied in cbg and carzone though i think the photos are gone now.

it seems to be driving okay, but to be honest i dont know that much about
automatics, so not sure how the gearbox should be. the engine sounds fine. had someone take a quick a look at it.

the tires are another story. total disgrace. i know they will fail the nct, but not sure if the dealer will fork out for a new set, or even a half decent set.

im caught between two stools, should i go back now with my a list of problems or should i let it fail the nct then go back with that list and wave the guarnantee and 3 month warranty in his face???

You'll need to have a mechanic check it out before you make a decision, as I said, Paul Nolan is your man. How much did you pay for it out of interest?

Welcome GTYIQ (I thought my handle was long winded!)

No dealer should sell a car with tyres in the condition that you describe.
Get your car to Paul Nolan as soon as possible to see what needs to be addressed and bring your dealer back a list thats needed to pass an NCT.

As per CJ - If the car has not been well maintained to date you will likely need droplinks (front and rear), anti roll bar bushes (and check the other bushes) - check when the cambelt, alt and ps belts where last done and do if neccessary.

Has the tip box been behaving itself?

Tell us a little about the car - any extras/colour etc?

Like the guys said - get the car over to Paul Nolan. But if he's completely booked up and you're really worried maybe you could meet up with some of the mechanically more experienced owners and have them look over the car?

Paul will probably tell you this but if you're not sure about the mechanical history of the car, the Timing belt should be considerded and the Automatic Transmission Fluid probably needs a change.

Did you trade something in for this price?
Its a lot of money for a 95 GR Tip - was it just imported? Give us some details (mileage, extras, colour etc) or pics on the car and I'll be in a better position to comment on the value.

Agreed, 6.5.k would be realistic from a dealer. If you need to get the timing belt changed, a service and suspension bits sorted you're talking about another few hundred quid, this will bring you pretty close to the 8k mark. The dealer should have at least serviced the car and changed the timing belt, if not, I'd get it back to him.

I'm really interested to know where you bought it, if you don't want to mention the dealership on the forum, send me a pm.

No hassles, a lot of the rest of us got caught with it when it got added first!

The photo beside your name is your avatar, click on 'profile' on the top of the window, and right down to the bottom of that page is the avatar.
