Best way is to use a good quality petrol, some redex if needed, and drve it seriously hard to the centre, keeps the oil hot and a much better chance of passing the emissions then. Unless your miles over the pass mark then it could be a lambda or CO2 sensor.

Thanks for that info.

It just passed the MOT last month, emissions should be ok?

Have you ever used dipotene? Reckon an oil change would make any difference?

This club is fantastic by the way..... Well done all!

Was shopping around for the last nearly 4 months, have travelled all around Ireland and I came across 6 FTOs with the heads leaking & white mayonaise in the oil cap - amazing to find so many with the same problem!

Also found one with the big end going & one with a lot of rust, theres a lot of chancers out there!!!

Was so happy to find this one, in absolute mint condition, well worth the wait!

94000 K, 1995 GR manual, black, spotless, completely orignal apart from wheels.

What spec is yours?

Frist day to join this site, any tips?

Welcome along, and hope you enjoy the site.
Nice car you got there by the sounds of things.
First comment is regarding the emissions for the VRT. AFAIK, it goes on the manufacturers figures for the car, and if these aren't available, you're automatically in the highest band. Each car isn't tested individually, so you're caught paying the highest band. This is my understanding of it anyway, but I'm open to correction.
I'd say come along to one of the meets if you can, there's one the end if the next month, and you'd get to know the crew.
There is LOTS of knowlegde here. If you have questions you have a look for related topics using the search feature, but if that fails, don't be afraid to ask, all the guys (and galls) around here are very nice.
Put up a few pics if you can, and congrats on the purchase. :D

I just seen that there, wexford is the next meet cool, I have never been to a meet before, should be interesting :D

Yeah I was looking on the revenue website last night, & it mentioned that you need to put the car through a C02 test & show documentation of it, plus it requests the orginal CO2 emissions of the car when it was first made... I JUST WANT TO DRIVE IT!!!!!!!!

Only one or two pix at the moment, will take some more & post them up soon....

Are there many girls in this club?

Sorry, read your first post wrong, thought it said emissions for NCT.
The VRT is a flat rate as far as I know, you're automatically in the higher tax bracket if buying a new car. But bringing in an FTO you should be paying 33% of the value of the car in ireland (thats my understanding of it), www.ros.ie has a calculator.

There is nothing you can do in relation to emissions that wil reduce the VRT. As Dragonheart said it is calculated on the supposed "OPEN MARKET VALUE". Newer vehicles havea stated emissioons level that is taken into account for VRT.

Yup, FTO falls into maximum VRT category, regardless of whether it's 1.8 or 2.0. Annual road tax is still cc based.

Ok this is what revenue.ie states...

"All passenger (category A) vehicles must have approved documentation confirming the level of CO2 emissions of the vehicle being registered. The VRT will be calculated by the official at the VRO, following inspection of the vehicle. In the case of a used vehicle you must also present the foreign registration document and a document, as approved by the Revenue Commissioners confirming the levels of CO2 emissions of the vehicle at the time of manufacture"

Very :r !!

Got a quote for 640 from ros.ie- which is not too bad,

When I do pay the VRT, will update this so everyone know exactly what the story is with this....

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated!! :)

no emissions figure or certificate of conformity is available for the FTO, so the VRT automatically jumps to the top rate.

VRT should only take about 10mins to sort, just go into your local motor tax office. Technically you should do it within 24 hours of buying the car, but don't worry, we won't tell anyone.

Its a '97, the VRT on it the week before I bought it was €1308, then after I had paid for the car etc. and she was on the way over it went up by a grand, must have revised their database or something. Whatever happened it cost me a grand extra.

Mine was €2800, although they were charging more until I pointed out that 2002 was the year it was imported into the UK, not the year of manufacture
