Same Gearbox?

Postby StewyD32 » Thu Sep 30, 2010 2:14 pm

I was just wondering is the GR and GX gearboxs the same as the GPX as i was told it was by someone and it wasn't by a dismantler. i.e the shaft connection

Can someone shed any light on this?

Gear ratios are different too. As long as you get driveshafts with ot you should be ok

Wouldn't the gear ratios effect when the mivec kicks in?

Hey gang.
As you guys know now I bought cullens gpx so I need some final clarification on the gearbox situation.

So...
If I'm able to get a gpx gearbox I just need to put it in and that's it done
Or
Get another model gearbox except the GS put it in and also the driveshaft.

So my questions are
-Will the driveshaft and gearbox from another model fit right in and not need any modification to hook it up.
-And also what is the story with the gear ratios. What effect would the different ratio have. Is it just simply that it's not a gpx in your gpx car set up and that's it .

If anyone can explain it please do as I'd appreciate it as I want to get it fixed asap
Thanks a mill

Hi,

Ive had a couple manual fto's and they all had this issue, one was particularly bad.
Issue was in relation to the cable support brackets that sit on top of the gearbox.
The rubbers mounts on these brackets wear and there is too much movement making reverse in particular
difficult to select.

I would make sure 100% that this is not your problem before swapping gearboxes.

If your box is the problem, im nearly sure that GX box will work perfect in GPX as long as you get the drives also from the donor car.
Ratios may be slightly different perhaps, but this should not be a problem.
After all they are both 2 litre engines.

Ok thanks gerry.
By any chance did you do everything yourself. I want wondering on the time frame taking out the gearbox and drive shaft and putting it into the GPX.
And on the really really really really of chance does anyone have a guide. I have a mechanic to do it im just very curious about it

Hi,

Ideally, you would be better off having a ramp, i didnt so it took a bit longer than it should have.
It took me bout 3-4 hours in total.
Granted ive done a few at this stage and know where all bolts are and tools required etc.
Its not a job i would take on as a novice, but if ur mechanically minded, take ur time, no rush and dont forget axel stands etc if ya have no ramp.

I have a mechanic to do it. I'm getting a gearbox and drive shaft of a gx but their still on the car and the mechanic wants more money because he thought i got the parts dismantled already.
Just wondering how much I'll be paying him an hour. In fairness it's about a third extra work for him

1st to 5th gear is perfect but the reverse gear has had it. Although I have been able to get it into reverse first thing in the morning first go. Also a few other times throughout the day by pressing the clutch and trying to stick it into reverse loads of times really quick together.
Cullen thinks it might be the connector rod, and I think so too.
There is no way of knowing for certain until it's opened up. Anyway if it is just the connector rod wouldn't it be nearly as cheap to just buy the gearbox?
I got a good price of Paul for the gearbox and driveshaft of the GX he's breaking

Hey guys i need some clarification from a few people that a different model (e.g GX) gearbox will fit the GPX with with the GX driveshaft as my mechanic said it woun't and he is adament about that. Im at a bit at loggerheads with him about this.
A quick reply about this would be great.

Thanks guys

your mechanic doesnt know what hes talking about - take the car somewhere else.

Ive stripped loads of gearboxes, ALL fto gearboxes are interchangable as long as you get the driveshafts to go with them as there are 4 different end cup that go with different boxes, 27spline, 29spline and then LSD ones which are different lengths.

So the answer is YES if you have driveshafts with your new box it will fit your FTO. The gear ratio's are different between GR's, GX's and GPX's but it wont affect you that much.

Yeah. Just about the splints. Are the gx and the gpx the same amount?

I doubt they are. I'd say gr and gx would be the same if anything

I think I have it sorted. Found a GPX gearbox, and have the car in a gearbox and clutch specialist now.
Should be ready 2moro.
Then I can get onto the rest of the to-do list. 8)
