To Sell or not to sell

Postby peteport » Thu May 13, 2010 1:50 pm

Hi Guys,

Having an argument with myself wether to sell the car or not and i was hoping ye could help,

basically its a black 97gr, with 205k kilometers on the clock, no nct, damaged wing (have a spare silver wing just no money or time to sort it), the paint on the bumper is flaking off in little bits, the under side of the bonnet is red and the aircon pump is missing ?!?!?!?! and maybe the timing and bushes need to be done.
This is the way I bought it and time and money were stopping me giving it the love it needs. but its my everyday car and it runs grand.

With that brief description would anyone have an idea of how much its worth?
as with many people fundage is getting tighter and tough decisions have to be made so i have to figure this one out, sell or not ???????

cheers guys

A lot of work has to be done on it, NCT which will result in higher costs, condition of bodywork etc.

All things considered, I wouldn't pay anymore than 1k for it. The question is, would you be willing to accept that and buy a run around for the same price, or would you prefer to keep it if gains are so little.

It's not worth a whole pile, GR isn't the most desirable of models especially if it's tiptronic.

Before deciding to keep I'd check the following:

* condition of exhaust system, particularly centre section and join between centre section and backbox
* how noisy are the tappets on startup
* does the gearbox work perfectly
* is there any rust on the underbody, particularly rear chassis legs and front suspension
* is the car driving straight with no wobbles, no suspension damage from accident\
* how tidy would the car realistically be after fixing the wing?

If it's gonna be a money pit then you'd have to seriously wonder whether it's worth fixing. I love FTOs but you can get manual GPX models for reasonable money that won't need lots of work.

I'd value the car at around 500 quid in its current condition.

Sounds like there is the potential for quite a bit of work (& expense) to put it through an NCT.
You'll do well to get circa 1K for it in the current climate unfortunately.

If it was my FTO and I didn't want to spend the money to get it right - then I'd break it for parts as you'd likely get a better return that way.

cheers for the replies guys,

forgot to mention it is manual, gearbox works grand, tappets are slightly noisy until its warmed up, no signs of major rust anywhere other than the battery tray, and the only sign of crash damage is the wing and dodgy paint job, chassis wise seems grand. theres a set of rays volks wheels and new pads all round, and a new radio with bluetooth etc. if any of that adds value i dont know.

probably should be on the or sale board now :smt102 so apologies to the moderators, still deciding though, but anything close to 1k mark sounds hopeful.

Thanks again lads
