They will be a good upgrade, but do you have an amp to get full potential out of them?

the hardest part in fitting a sub in an FTO is getting the wiring from the battery into the cabin, the rest is easy.

i take it you use the wiring in the back of the radio ,they are labelled sub woofer, left speaker , right speaker etc.

just looking over the instructions for subwoofer, seems pretty straight forward, only problem i see is the wire going from sub to radio is just sinlge long wire with no connections on either end. how do i wire it up. there is an output lead at the back of radio labelled sub woofer, how can i connect these?
and there is two input leads ,one black one red,i assume these go into left and right speaker outputs in back of radio too or? :?
gonna buy 6x9 speakers tomorrow and get cracking, i think i will need all the help i can get, never really did anything like this before. what ill do ill run all cables through car first before connecting anything and go on from there, BRING ON THE TECH MEET. would love this to go ahead. pick up on a load of DIY.

The common wires used in a sub install are:

12v permanent live straight from the battery (+terminal) to the amp. (heavy cable)
12v ignition relay wire from ignition/radio to amp
Earth wire from amp to body of the car (boot floor, suspension bolt etc.)
RCA audio cable from the rear of the stereo to the RCA input in the amp
RCA audio cable from amp to subwoofer/speakers

you have an output for the sub which will use a single RCA cable. most stereos have pre-outs (left and right) which are red and black. these pre-outs or sub-outs have a separate volume control on your stereo so you can adjust the bass to suit.

Subwoofer wiring kits are widely available and are well worth getting.

Is yours an amp and sub in one unit?

Check the back of the stereo and see if it has RCA plugs as well as the sub-out plug. if not I guess you just use one channel going to the amp

yeah its all in one unit colm. there is rca plugs and sub out plug at back of radio, all with labels on them, left speaker, right speaker, sub woofer etc.
ill post up the unit on the side of the amp and the wires . you can get a better look at it. sorry for annoying ya mate :D

just use the L and R RCA cables, don't mind the sub out plug.

I imagine the sub out plug just sends low frequency bassy signal for a specific sub, but I'd say using the pre-outs would be better in this case.

I'm open to correction on this

handiest thing to do is wire the amp power to the cig lighter (the terminal in the middle, not the one on the side) it's only for a relay to turn the amp on.

on the back of the cig lighter socket, there's 2 terminals, the earth is on the outside, and the live is in the centre.

sub and amp fitted but which wire?????

Postby paul2508 » Tue Jan 12, 2010 12:28 am

topics merged - colm_mcm

hi peeps after a few numb and some grazing fingers i finally have sub and amp fitted,WOOHOO :ll "give my self a round of applause" :ll , power cable fitted, earth wire grounded and remote wire wired too. i put in the two rca cables into the amp,one is red and one is black, now ........ which output will i put them into at the back of the radio? there are five of them.

1.sub woofer(blue)
2.front speaker(red)
3.front speaker(white)
4.rear speaker(red)
5.rear speaker(white)

i didnt connect any of them just in case anything blows or shorts or anything like that,
i have had my fair share of blown fuses.
just dont wanna take the chance. would rather know where to put them and get it right first time..

P.S (Colm) good thinking about the cigarette lighter :smt023

use connections 4 and 5 - they're just pre-outs. handy to have so many to choose from if you're fitting more amps

it's a good idea to run the amp on low levels till the sub gets a few weeks old. supposed to be good for it - allows it to stretch or something.

so the sub will still work without the sub output connected?

if you turn down the bass on your stereo it's good as well as you're not belting the ar$e out of the 6X9's and 6.5" speakers

i.e you're using the sub for the low frequency stuff so you get less distortion from the other speakers.
