4spd V 5spd tip.

Postby ronbyrne » Tue Feb 13, 2007 7:06 pm

had a 95 gpx tip a few years back and unfortunately had to sell it, In the market again for a new motor (as in 10 to 12 years old !! lol) and am drawn to the same 2 motors i wanted before. fto or alfa romeo. has anyone here got experience of driving both the 4 and 5 speed tip ? i would have thought the 5 speed makes a difference in overall driving comfort (less of that slipping clutch like drone) any advice ?[/i]

You'll have to go facelift for the 5 speed tip - however my advice would be to buy a mivec manual!

.............Oh did I mention mine is for sale.

I've no real experience of the 4 speed tip, but as a regular driver of FTO's and alfas I feel qualified to comment!
As regards the tip gearbox, my preference would be to go for the 5 speed. Accelerate, ease off and it has flicked up into 5th, whereas on a manual car you'd still be pricking around in 3rd or 4th. Surprisingly economical if you can resist the top end end of the rev range (unlikely!).This combined with the more desirable face lift shape, it's the one to go for.
The the 4 speed is that bit older, and there will be many out there that just have not been maintained properly. That said if you can get a good one and the price is right, don't dismiss them out of hand.

The alfa 156 is a blast as well, not in the same performance league as the FTO but still very enjoyable, owned one myself and have been driving one on loan for the last two weeks -always enjoy driving it.....

nice one mustang, i think i'm gona go for the Alfa though, just to get it out of my system, everyone should drive one at some stage !! ive decided to go for the V6 2.5 with selepeed gearbox, just to guarantee that i'll have problems with it (lol), then back to the old fto. Maybe start a trade system !! fto for alfa then back again !! lol
