Iridium/Platinum plug help !!

Postby waynebowden » Thu Jan 23, 2014 11:29 am

Hey Guys the GR is currently in for a full service, brakes, Suspension and fluid change and I was using this opportunity to upgrade to performance plugs.
But I’m having a nightmare tracking ones down.

As they car is in the garage it has to be a local auto factor purchase and any I go to advise that rear and front back plugs are different. Is this correct?

They suppliers can only supply Iridium plugs for the rear bank, which I feel would be pointless.

Can any of you guys supply the part numbers needed for front and rear plugs in either Iridium or platinum?

As always thank you guys for any information provided.

When I got some NGK plugs for my brothers FTO, the fronts were copper and rears were iridium or platinum (can't remember now, it was a while ago). When I had a look at Denso ones for someone the other day, they list VK22 for the front and rear ones.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply Oilman

I just got off the phone with the main dealer and got some info

The fitments for the plugs are identical rear and back. The reason parts catalogue’s list different front and rear is because of the difficulty accessing the rear bank Mitsubishi have long life iridium plugs in the back and standard short life plugs on the front.

This makes perfect sense as form an analytical point of view it seemed ridiculous to have different fitting on the same engine.

Any way thanks guys

All correct.

I just can't believe that you got a main Mitsubishi dealer to admit that an FTO is even a Mitsubishi, yet alone give you some useful info about one.

Yeah it was in a last ditch attempt really

All local auto factors either did not stock or again could only provide long life for the rear bank.

Called my closest dealer located in northern Ireland( admittedly under the pretense I was looking to purchase)
Donnelly & Taggart Limited
Courtauld Way,Campsie Ind EstEglintonCounty LondonderryBT47 3DN

The guy on the end of the line was very helpful and informative, but as always parts prices are astronomical.

Got the 6 NKG Iridium plugs for 65 euro from a local place which I’m happy to pay. This garage trip final price is climbing and climbing but im hoping to smash the NCT once I get the car back.

Sound proofing and rust proofing will be next once I located a garage to work in or the weather picks up

I can't believe someone would advise putting 3 iridium and 3 copper plugs in an engine, I would only fit 6 identical plugs.
Also iridium plugs aren't performance plugs rather just long life plugs, standard copper plugs are best.

Although iridium plugs are the longer lasting option, they are also a performance plug. As they last longer, they are better as a performance option because copper plugs can wear out quite quickly with modified engines. The NGK and Denso race plugs are iridium.

You see there is no advantage to using iridium bar the long life side, it's only the tip that is iridium and that is more durable. A copper plug has a nickel tip and the core is copper.

The most important thing is to get the correct heat range. Also that the plug gap is correct.
