HKS super dragger exhaust

Postby Colin C » Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:24 am

There was a HKS super dragger fitted to my GPX when I got it. I find it excessivly loud especially at lower revs. When I start it in the mornings I think I must be waking half the neighborhood up, & I find the exhaust is so loud you can barely hear the engine over the rumble of it the whole way through the rev range. I'ld prefer it to be a little quiter whilst idling and at lower revs but still have a bit of a growl at higher revs. I was considering changing it at some stage over the next few months (a bit smashed after buying the car). Does anyone have any recomendations as to which exhaust system to go for. I don't know weather to go for an origional Mitsi or a different aftermarket exhaust. Also what sort of money are we talking to change it out?

Well if you're still looking for a bit of a growl theres not much point going for a standard exhaust - they are fairly quite. Is the HKS exhaust in good condition - they can rot fairly easily so you maybe the noise is being caused by some problem with the exhaust.

Is the CAT still on?

I'll be changing from my own exhaust (RSR Invidia) very shortly but wouldn't imagine it to be much quieter than a HKS. Camskill and Ricerocket have good deals on exhausts - I have my eye on this one - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... 61s11p5730

I have the HKS Dragger on mine, I know what you mean about waking the neighbours. Spicily when I park in the car port. The best though is setting off car alarms as you drive by

The brother has the HSK High power silent on his 200sx and it sounds the business. I think it's what you are looking for, quite at the low end and grumbls at the high end. If you want to get a listen send a PM and we can arrange to meet.

Not to well up on all this as I'm fairly new to it. The exhaust looks in good condition on the surface in any case.

I have no idea at all. I know the guy I bought it from told me not to use a decat with this particluar exhaust. That means nothing to me but may mean something to you? The exhaust was already on it when he had bought it from the previous owner so he may have just been relaying what he was told. The only other thing he said was that it was a full stainless system and that there was no middle box.

I won't have the cash to change it in the next month so maybe at the karting meet some of you could take a look at it. As I said, I'm not too familiar with all this whereas some of you may be able to tell if it sounds like a HKS should or if it's too loud.

Colin, the twin exit Mongoose is a good compromise of performance vs nosie, its quiet enough around the place at low revs but really comes to life after 5k RPM, highly recommended if you're not look for too much attention in your local neighbourhood. Check our Rice Rockets site for more info on Mongoose: http://www.ricerocketuk.co.uk/mitsubishi.shtml

Obviously still has the CAT on then - imagine he advised against taking off the CAT because its that the increased airflow would shorten the HKS's lifespan (short in any case) - It would certainly be even louder with the CAT off. The mild steel baffles in the HKS are prone to falling apart - if you get it on a ramp just give the exhaust a shake or bang on the silencer and listen for a rattle or movement of material - This will give you a good indication of the condition of the exhaust. Unless the real reason its so loud is that theres been some surgery done on the silencer and the baffles have been taken out in which case you would have an extremely loud exhaust.
