Well, got redundancy notice today. We were expecting about 6 to go out of the office of about 25, about 13 went. Out of 8 architectural technicians there was only one there longer than me so thought I'd be safe whatever happened, they ended up only keeping her on.
So now the search starts for where to go cause theres no point even looking in ireland. My FTO has already got a place to stay when I'm gone, some might know him as +1, but Drew will be keeping her safe for me and Hopefully bringing her to the meets and stuff instead of me. I should still be here for the May one cause I reckon itll be June before I head off.

Well Oz was one of the places on the list. Dubai as well and Canada.
Tis only keep the head up, start the search early and I'll find me the perfect place to find an FTO. Sorry! To find a job I mean.
It could be worse though, least I have no major ties like a mortgage or kids. I can go and it wont have too much of an effect. And I was planning on going anyway in the near future so itll give me that push anyway if nothing else. Theres always a bright side to things I suppose.

Gave 4 weeks notice ya, and the basic redundancy payoff which isnt much to be fair but at least its enough to set me up abroad hopefully.

Ah $hit man, really sorry to hear that. Seems to be the story in our industry at the moment. But your right, all you can do is keep your head up, and I'm sure you'll find new opertunities.
From what I hear even Dubai is tightening up a lot, along with everything else, they ain't getting as much for their black gold these days. Canada might be a nice spot though.

Sorry to hear this MJ.
I'm hearing stories like this way too many times a day now.
Just have to look at it as an opportunity to gain experience in another country (cause theres F***all work to be found in Ireland).

I had a similar experience back in 93/94 before there was ever a"Celtic Tiger" - travelled and worked abroad and came back a few years later a better man in a lot of ways. Its not all about work - there is (a bloody good) life outside Ireland.

Sorry to hear that Martin, a right kicker when it hits, especially if you don't expect it. As you say at least on the upside you're debt free which takes the pressure off. Sure best of luck whatever you decide to do! Hope you stay on the forum.

Thanks for all the good cheer guys. :) It helps, really it does.
Whatever happens and wherever I go (and its looking like Dubai or New Zealand at the moment) I'll be staying on the forum no doubt!!! No fear of that! And if its NZ I hit then hopefully I'll have FTO no.2 at my side (no.1 still takes the queen spot though!!). :D And when I come back she'll be there waiting for me!
I hear what you're saying Shane about good life outside the eire isles, and to be honest I agree, been thinking about it for a while, just didnt think I'd be forced to make the decision, but as my mother said to me tonight, all things happen for a reason and maybe this'll give you the kick in the ar$e to get moving. Rock on Mom. Never a truer word spoken. Will never know whats out there till I go and find out for myself.

Sorted so. Decisions made, going to New Zealand. To the northern tip of the North Island, Whangarei, looks savage, and of course plenty of FTOs hopefully there too! Sorting visas out at the moment but hopefully shouldnt be too hard to get there.

Freakin' awesome mate. New Zealand is spectacular..

you can literally go climbing on glaciers on one day and two days later be in a rain foresty place.

Was there for all of three days when I went to Australia, was too jetlagged to really enjoy it (12 hour shift from Denmark or something similar anyways)

I do remember people being extremely friendly and that the place was just staggeringly beautiful.

You going job huntin' once you get there?

Oh and remember that once you've set up residency in another country, you can claim back any tax you've paid that year in thew country you're leaving.. Call the tax office for more info..
