Headlight Condensation

Postby Dragonheart » Wed Aug 01, 2007 7:01 pm

Got a problem with one of my front lamps. The inside has got some foggy looking condensation stuff on it which I'm afraid will start to grow stuff off it if I dont get it cleaned soon. I'm half afraid to go taking it out cause putting it back sometimes throws the lights out of alignment, I know they're easy enough to put back into line but the last time I went messing with lights in my old car I throw them so far out it took the mechanic almost an hour to reallign one of them in particular. The other thing is how do I stop it happening again, the fact its only on one is a bit strange.

i had that problem with my civic, what i did was went to a friends garage and rooted out some sort of heater, heat the lamps must be very hot and the mist dissapears! while its hot put some compound and buff it in....just be sure not to hold the torch too close to the plastic!!!

Theres loads of threads on here with regard to misty lamps - just do a search. I believe the easiest way to clean out the headlamp unit is to take out the bulb at the back of the unit and wrap a clean lint free cloth around the wire from a clothes hanger (make sure you hold onto the cloth or you'll have a job getting it back out) and just wipe the mist off from the inside.

A longer term solution is to stick the lamp in the oven (put on a few scones for me while you're at it) and prise the glass apart from the main unit when possible - then reseal using an adhesive silicon.
