Power cap - what to hook up & How much...

Postby Muad_dib77 » Tue Jan 31, 2006 11:33 am

Just to drive myself and everyone around me even more demented...I've now bought a 1.0farad cap.

I figured that since my aul Civic had issues with my amp and 2x 12" umpti-umpti - I'm thinking the puny battery in the FTO would have a hard time keeping up with 2xscreens dvdchager headunit speakers and the 2x12"..

So eh.. does anybody have an idea about how much gear I can hook up to the cap? Should I only hook up some of the gear to the cap - and leave the rest on the "mains" (Amp & HU on Cap -screens on "Mains")..
..??
What is a Farad?? - the unit means little or nothing to me...
I'm assuming it's the "amount of power the cap is storing" but ehm.. that's about the extend of my knowledge on the subject really..

The Farad is the basic unit of capacitance, google it if you'rereally interested!
I wouldn't consider using the standard battery with a 1F cap, you'll find that it will drain your battery very quickly, consider using a battery with a rating of 75AH (amp hours) or more.

If you've bought a second hand cap, make sure that its fully discharged before installing it, they hold a massive amount of charge and can really mess up your electrical system if installed incorrectly.

You should only need to hook up your amps to the cap, if you wanna take a closer look at my (basic) install, let me know.

You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine'.

Oh - right..Darn...some how I was hoping the cap would be enough - but I suppose it makes sense.. I guess I should think of the CAP as a power smoother..?

NICE1 - yes it is secondhand...I would almost certainly have messed up something upon connecting it if you hadn't reminded me to do this! Cheers!

Will find something 12v and hook it up...also have a volt meter lying about so I can measure any residual current.

Neat! Thanks.. That looks very clean... I might give you a call when the CAP arrives. Depending on how long it takes me to install the seats I might go a get that piece of MDF I need to fit the 12" behind the rear seats..and then it's just a matter of getting the wiring done and sticking in a battery..:-) Money pit :-) heheheh
