wierd vibration

Postby Sebastian » Fri Jul 27, 2007 9:02 am

all of this started 2-3 weeks ago on my 96 5 speed manual GR

after 100 km /h , mostly between 110-130 km/h .. the car gets a strange and violent vibration , i feel it on the steering wheel , on the pedals , mostly on the drivers side.when i push the brake pedal its more violent.the sensation is like you have a flat tire ,it's enoying and i'm getting scared that somethimg might happen .It dissapears when i leavet it under 60mph or if i go over 80-90 mph (on my private track  )

i have 4 new tyres on the car since june .i'm checking the pressure avery week so its not tyre pressure
i did have a quick look on the tyres, brakes and everithing regarding transmision & wheels but everithing seems to be OK .no leaks ,no loose bushes ,brake pads & disc seem good enough.. :? :?

any piece of advice ?

strangely the car acts nice until it reaches 60mph

Ya, was going to suggest getting your wheels balanced, you say new tyres went on in June, so they might not have balanced the wheels properly, or possibly some of the balancing weights fell off?

hercules problem is a bit different i think allthough the speed wich the car goes nuts is the same 60-80 mph

the wheels were balanced when the tyres were fitted (the weight ballance is still there )

I'd take it to DTAS and get it checked - they're do a laser realignment and everything for an alright price..

Find the details on the services page :-)

if the vibration comes in and disappears again between a range of speeds its mostly due to the "static imbalance" of the wheels , it can happen twice between speeds, eg 60-70mph and then again at 80-90mph, id get wheels balanced properly and check tracking too.
IMO a lot of tyre places dont balance wheels properly :?

My wheels are definintely balanced and aligned perfectly.
I fully serviced the car and changed the front brake pads.

Vibration is still there though.

I noticed something while working on the driver's side brakes.
There's a guard that sits behind the brake disk does anyone know
what it's called?

Well mine is bent at one point and feels like it could do with replacing,
it's possible that this is causing the vibration problem on my car because I can see how this guard could come into contact with the brake disc.

I haven't a clue how to change it or even what it's called but I'll certainly change it in the future if I can get more info.

took out the wheels / ca;ipers in the weekend and changed the brake pads
Bushes were not in a super condition so i guess the will go next .
Inflated the wheels afterwards and took her for a spin

it's not that bad actualy now , the vibration is now muuuuuch reduced
the alloys & brake discs are grand

it sounds like a sticky caliper to me... check to see if your brakes are excessively hot, usually only one side and it's a pretty common problem.
