Alloys Cleaning

Postby Dave » Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:57 am

Folks,
My alloys as some of you may have seen have a large lip on them, but I've now noticed that there is a lot of grim build up, and not the usual brake dust, there are little black marks all over them that need a nail brush with serious elbow grease to get off, now i don't mind cleaning them, but obviously the laquer that was on them has come off, is there an easy clean for this and is there something i can use to re-laquer them so this won't happen again? I have a feeling I may have to send them to get refurbished to get them back to the standard I want....

Cheers
Dave

Tiny bit of petrol or whitespirits should get rid of the gunk..

but you're right - to reseal them is a better solution.

might try the petrol, they are looking fairly bad come to think of it, i might try waxing them to see if that works!

Oh and Dave... tell St Pauls to get cheaper will you.

With a brand name of "travellers" you would expect their insurance to be a steal.

Got a quote for a refurb on the curbing damage and re-polishing each wheel, takes one day, was quoted €80- per wheel, anyone ever gone down this route? Sounds a bit expensive to me... anyone got any other contacts? I used www.wefixalloywheels.com, they're based out in Bray...

I got a wheel done years ago with them. It was an alloy with a chunk missing on the rim. They repaired it/ filled it and it was almost an invisible mend. Cost about 80/100 euros or pounds at the time.

Yeah the old man got stuff done with them and he said that the work he did was quality, 80 squid a wheel is reasonable I suppose considering he's doing the curbing and polishing...

are they over in clondalkin behind Tony Boland's? I bought alloys off him before, but I dunno if I'd rate him enough to do the job I want done...
I might just bite bullet and go with this crowd, for the sake of maybe 50euro, just as long as they do a good job!
