Spliting the gearbox

Postby Aido C » Fri Aug 28, 2009 3:29 pm

I trying to split my new broken manual gearbox  Has anyone in the club done this before. I have a taken out the bolts that hold the gearbox and the bell-housing together and I've split the box about 6mm the whole way around but now its getting very tight. There are a few bolts at the back of the box that I haven't released. I believe these are to hold the gear selectors in place. Does anyone know if I have to take these out? When the gearbox is split are all the gear mechanisms bound to the back of the bell housing or to the back of the gearbox?

Thanks for any info on this :)

Ive now taken out the bolts that hold the gear selectors in place. I have discovered a cir-clip/snap ring on the back of the box. This was hidden under a plastic cover. When the snap ring is released I believe it should let the gearbox housing come off, (everything else is already off the box). The snap ring seems to be binding the output shaft on to the gearbox housing. So in theory, when I release the snap ring the gearbox housing should come off and I should be left with all the gear mechanisms/shaft on the back of the bell-housing, but thats not happening:( There seems to be a snag with this snap ring. Anyone know it?
I'm making progress. It's just a little slow:( It's a good learning experience though.
If I'm way off the track here please let me too :smt002

Looks like you're making good progess with it though, and learning from it too, no harm in that!

Im sure Rory posted up pics of him spliting a gearbox before. It was a Tip one though but still might help you. Use search and you should find it Id say.

Went like charm today. Got the gearbox stripped. I can't see any signs of damage been done inside the box from the bearings been gone so it might be ok :D Just waiting on new bearings and oil seal from camskill now:)

I hope this conversion goes to plan, you're done well so far. Looking forward to a spin in my old GPX once the job is complete ;)

This is gonna be some example of a Manual Mivec when its finished - having driving this FTO a couple of times - for me it was just the Tip box (NOI) that held this FTO back.

If my mission is a success I'm gonna put up a post on how to do a full bearing overhaul. The bearings are quite expensive but nothing as expensive as getting a gearbox specialist to do it. I got quotes from €1000( pirvite) to €600+VAT(as Trade). I've taken photos along the the way

Think the way you're doing it Aido could save a lot of people a good few bucks in the future when gear boxes do go. Will be a breakthrough!

My bearings should arrive tomorrow and the project will commence again:)
What gear oil should I use? Semi-synthetic or fully synthetic? What viscosity?
Thanks

I'd recommend a 75w-90 fully synth gear oil such as Fuchs Titan Sintopoid.

I got the gearbox back together there yesterday. It took a week for the bearings to arrive. I'm already to start the conversion now :smt003
