5 things you love/hate about your FTO

Postby Sebastian » Sat Jul 21, 2007 3:08 pm

It would be cool to see why those cars are so loved or hated(tough word ) by their owners.

96 GR

Things i hate about the FTO:

- the central locking - i allways have to check it because sometimes one of the doors or both dont lock from remute
- the insurrance - why you have to go to so much troubble to get a good quote (or even TO GET a quote) for the FTO
- the small interior space - sometimes the space is just not enough
- the boot lock - my key doesnt open the boot(proobably was changed) so i have to do it everytime from inside
- Parts - they are so hard to get .. enoying

Things I love about the FTO :

- the feeling that you get when you drive this piece of metal on the street
its something different in it's class
- the sexy shape, colour and the sound of the revs goin' up
- the dash - so cool for a 90's car
- the power of the engine - i know it's no Supra or Skyline or Subaru but really gives you satisfaction
- the fact that FTO-ireland is here for support 8)

i know some of the HATED stuff can be fixed though. ;)

I wont say I hate anything about my baby..that would just hurt her..

Loves:

1. The Kick I get from putting the foot down
2. The look & shape of her
3. The chuck-ability, Handling and cornering - this car really rewards you wen you stick the right tyres on her..
4. All electrics - Yes I still play with my windows when I sit at the lights..
5. The fact that some people still can't figure out what I'm driving always amuses me..Last I heard was.."Wow That Lexus sportscar must have set you back a fortune"..Indeed it did! :-D As long as they don't call it a huyndai!

Like Less-es:

1. Rear Seats - Why? Mine are in the kitchen annoying my girlfriend..
2. Standard headlamps - they're SO weak. Fixed mine with a HID kit.
3. Brakes are a bit weak - ordered uprated front discs and red stuff pads for the front. Going installing braided hoses as well.
4. Std exhaust is made from old soda-cans - replaced mine with Mongoose.
5. Nasty looking lock on the rear - hoping to get it removed sooner or later.

I love my FTO - every time I drive her it feels special and I've had her a while now. I don't think any other car in the price range offers the same thrills. Sure insurance is dear - sure parts are a tad tricky to come by at times, but that's all part of drivng a special car. If there's bits you don't like that can be changed..change it! :)

LIKES:
1/ the sound of that mivec kicking in.
2/ it pulls like a mother fu~@er at high revs.
3/ sexy curves, and mines a facelift........ even sexier IMO :P
4/ mines a manual
5/ not many around that are 1999, GPX manual with version R spoiler and it turns so many heads , especially when i wash and polish it ............ but TBO that doesnt happen very often

DISLIKES:
1/ AIR CON and power steering belt, should be seperate entities altogether, what a design flaw
2/ i love white, but its a female dog to clean.
3/ not the quietest cockpit in the world, but eh!.......... i guess thats the price i pay for that sweet sound.
4/ lack of genuine performance mods
5/ gobshi@es asking me if its a ferrari or an aston martin

LIKES:
1. The sound. V6 through a 5zigen exhaust with decat pipe. sounds like a race car.
2. The look of the car, especially from the front. beautiful.
3. The fact its a 99 facelift AERO spec GP version R manual. rare enough.
4. cockpit/seats/wheel/ I really like the interior. cocooned in.
5. Loads of bootspace, and the engine bay is a lovely engine bay to clean.

DISLIKES:
1. A rattle that I cannot seem to find beside the driver seat
2. Removing the intake manifold to check/change plugs
3. The noise of tappets (mine is ok now but I know its susceptible)
4. standard rims are just 'ok'
5. broken cigarette surround plastic area (weak and common to break)

Haven't had mine long ;) but here goes

love:
the reflection of the nose in the back of pickups or cars in front
the sound of the MIVEC
the burble from the exhaust on idle
the rarity value
the fact that I got mine for so little cash!

hate:
the way my climate control buttons don't light up
the rev counter not working!
rear seat room
not as tuneable as a VTEC

that's about it!

If you remove your c/c unit you should see little black screw in bulbs that you can easily replace to make your c/c unit light up.

Love:

The MIVEC sound. It gets particularly delicious at 6000RPM.
That everybody and their dogs stare at the car as it goes past.
The comfort of the drivers seat.
The electronic folding mirrors!
The way it looks.
Almost everything else about it.

Dis-love:

That my sunglasses don't fit in the door pocket.
That everybody and their dogs stare at the car as it goes past.
That I went through a half tank of petrol in one evening.
That it's almost impossible to take off from traffic lights without a roar.
That I can't work out how to switch on the full beams.

Love
The look
The performance
The rarity
The practicality, decent boot, 4 seats.
The V configuration, so much cooler than an inline 4

Hate.
The damn twitchy steering on uneven surfaces.
The way you get this blank look when you go into your local motor factors and ask for even the most basic part for the car. -you may as well be asking for a flux capacitor for your DeLorean
The insurance

Just a quick comment on this.. A friend of mine recently had some issues with her Honda - her having very little idea about how to replace fuses & battery in her car I offered to help. Somehow the 80amp battery fuse had gone, so I had to track one down for her.. 4 places we went to - four! the 1st three all started looking through the collection of bladefuses - goes to show that even with the most common car you can get stuck for the simplest of little parts..

In the end I went to an MG/Seat garage on a whim - and presto..they had one.. 15e though..

Love:
- Design curves still look in season for a 13 year old motor
- Start sound and idle burble w. decat Mongoose
- Mivec + Tunnels
- Seeing people disappear in rear view mirror
- The fact that I'm in an 8th year of ownership and have only had a couple of minor problems with the car

Dislike
- Lack of torque below 3k
- Windscreen wipers not smooth over 90kph or so
- Stock GPX alloys are a beeeatch to clean - which is why I no longer bother
- Attention from boys in blue. Stared at all the time, stopped many times, fined many times (hey maybe it's me and not the car  )
- Insurance. I was paying over a grand for many years
