car is dead, help urgently needed!

Postby pameehan » Wed Nov 10, 2010 11:22 pm

hi, got an fto again recently, first one gave me no trouble, this one is killin me and my wallet, when i bought it the battery light was comin on when i'd put my foot down, knew this was an alternator. this progressively got worse though and the car wouldn't pass 3k revs, and it was only getting there very slowly, for a finish it was impossible to drive, ordered an alternator from camskill and the mechanic just phoned me, still no joy. he put it in and as it was just when i gave it to him, it will start kind of ok, but when u engage drive and put your foot on the power it stalls or just crawls, dont know what this could be and could really use help.
for the record its a 95 gpx mivec tip tronic, and i'm in limerick.
thanks

I assume you've changed the battery? Standard FTO batteries are from a micra. Get a big fook off one in halfords or autoworks and see how it goes? No harm giving the stepper motor a clean and having a look at the starter if you've trouble starting it. Spark plugs changed recently?

battery made no dif, tried that. i didn't think the spark plugs would make that big a dif would they? mechanic has it at the moment and he said it'll be fri or sat before he gets at it again and that he'll have to check to see what it is, just wonderin if anybody here had the same problem and might be able to tell me what the problem was so i could advise my mechanic and save some quids!

Possibly a coil pack gone down I would think. If one dies it take out 2 spark plugs. I would make the engine very rough and juddery.
Also possible fuel supply problem, when was the filter last changed.

Think you can rule out a gearbox problem.
Ignition, timing or fuel supply problem I reckon.

not sure about filter, bought the car from a guy in glin, it'd been parked up for a while, i think close to a year it was parked for so i filled it with petrol when i bought it and it wasn't too bad but at night time the battery light would come on when over 3k revs, this just got worse and impacted the rev limit to 3k then it'd only go to 2500 rpm but was really slow on gettin there. eventually it was undrivable, got the alternator and still no joy :x would you have these parts if i needed them, coil pack, torque sensor?

I have plenty parts, not sure what he means by "torque sensor".
I would extract any fault codes that may be stored in the ECU, this may give you an indication of previous problems.
Was the alt you got new or recon. Al lot of guys have had problems with recon alts.

Personally I would have sarted with the things you can check yourself. Plugs, fuel filter, air filter etc. This way you are eliminating servicable parts as the cause of the problem.

Torque converter would normally cause a problem when car is in gear.

Car is still with mechanic, trying to get my hands on a big box of spare elec parts that he can swap out to see what the problem is, or if anybody wants to donate their car for a couple of days it'd be well appreciated!

really feel for you dude, sounds like your going through what i have been and still am. had similer rev and drive trouble, my car was showing alternator fault code so new alt, plugs and leads fault code went but trouble didn't.this lead to them looking at fuel issues and found part of filler neck missing so tank had water and crud in..... then he tells my new alternator has gone down but similer to you im not on mechanics top priority so hasn't checked alt but has started fitting new tank filler neck and fuel pump but after fitting them today tells me new pump isn't working. this is driving me crazy ben trying to sort for about 5 months really annoying
good luck

Finally got to the bottom of this one. After a lot checking and testing, I found the CAT CON blocked solid. Removed exhaust and engine starts first time and revs to max. First time seeing this on an FTO.
