Belt change - waterpump too?

Postby kevinod » Fri Jul 22, 2005 10:09 am

Guys,

my belts are due to be replaced in the not too distant future, so I'm ordering in a set to get it sorted out, incl. tensioner, cambelt, ps belt and alt belt.

I know for other cars, when you replace those, its recommended to replace the water pump too, once you've the belts off its just a couple of extra bolts and it comes off. Is that the same in the FTO? Should I be ordering a water pump too?

I wouldn't bother replacing it unless you have to, it might be a bit over zealous, spend the money on a decent set of pads or something, the pump may well have plenty of like in it yet!

Zacob posted a similar quiry before, here and I was a bit sceptical of the water pump change. That was before I realised that it was common practice on other cars. Now I'm not so sure :?
I've scanned through the various FTO manuals and can't find anything on this. That said I think the workshop manuals are a bit poor in that respect they don't really make recommendations/ suggestions or give many guidelines -strictly a how to guide. Anyone have anything 'official' on wheather or not mitsubishi recommend a water pump change with the T belt?

FWIW when you change the belts on a Golf GTI you're advised to chance the water pump as well

Ya, my Dad did the belts & water pump on his Passat not that long ago.

The Peugeot 205 is another one I've heard for definate.

The more I think about it, the pump has done 91k kms roughly, 10 years at that, and the new belts are then supposed to be good for another 100k. Might be good to do it, once the belts are off its only a couple of bolts, save myself trouble in however long more the pump would last.

Wonder how much they cost...

On my last cambelt change on the black fto i changed out the waterpump, easier to do it then than have it fail 20k later and having to replace the belts again.
