Another strange noise

Postby fatboyfat7 » Sat Dec 13, 2008 12:23 am

Lads the last few days Ive been getting this strange noise from my engine bay. It started the first few days only when I started the car after it being left overnight but now its always there, even when its just idilling. (*sp) and TBH i think itrs getting louder. Dont think its tappets cause it sounds like it might be a belt... Any ideas?

First port of call would be the belts - possibly squeeling when damp or maybe a pulley/tensioner in poor nick? If the belt squeels try sprinkling talcum powder on to the belt (mind your fingers) and see if it stops.

it sounds like belts to me. If your looking down on top of the engine, it sounds like its coming from the left hand side. Its there when im stopped, when i drive and with the clutch in. As I rev tho its hard to tell if its still there cause of the exhaust, but its def there up to 3000 at least. I just had the timing belt done when it was down at Steelroes. Will it be okay to drive until I get it sorted? I'll try the talc 2m and see how it goes. Thanks lads.

If its the belts its simple to fix, just undo the bolt on the left side (the side nearest the wing) of the pulley and tighten the tensioner bolt. I had the same noise and it sorted it. Press down on the belt too just to see how loose it is if thats the problem, if its not at risk of coming off then its safe to drive, just very annoying.
