Opening Tight Wheel Nuts

Postby Kace » Tue Oct 03, 2006 12:09 pm

Guys - as you know the brace that comes with the FTO is really light weight. My other half is in a situation (car parked at work in Eastpoint) where she has a puncture and nobody can get the wheel nuts loose.

Anyone know a good everyday item that can be used to slide over the brace so allow additional leverage to open the nuts? I have a 2 foot iron pipe at home but it's in Galway and we're in Dublin

Get a large bloke to jump on it!

WD40 could be handy as well!

She has tried the bloke thing - they must be small in Eastpoint.

WD could be next option though

Somethign that does sound a bit stupid..but sometimes these things work..

ger her to "pretend to want to tighten it" sometimes this'll get the nut moving - and you'll subsequently be able to remove it..

but hey - WD is your friend in a tight spot..(cough!)

Kace, drop down the motor factors and pick up an extendable wheel brace, they shouldn't be too expensive, failing that, yu could pck up a lenght of conduit or pipe in the local hardware store :?:

For a second there I thought you were going to suggest wavin.

I've always found a cross brace did the job....

I was thinking maybe a lump hammer against the standard brace should break the seal on the seized nuts and free them.

The brace might bounce back and hit the lady in the face - not much fun in that! I'm willing to bet that you can fir atleast two burly blokes on that brace thing.
If they then do a bit of bouncing it totally should give..

Is there no recovery service in her insurace at all?

This is drastic sh1t, but when in trouble give anything a go..

A) No WD40? Get oil off the dipstick, keep smearing on a rag/tissue etc and rub into and all around the seized nuts.

B) Have a look around, theres got to be a builing site around, if there is ask for a loan of scaffoling tube, the longer the better, maybe 500mm to 1m length, fit the brace to the nut, slide the tube straight over and down tight to the "L" part. Try and keep the angle of the brace/tube pointing up at about 30 degrees ie towards the wing mirror. Law of the lever, given a long enough lever and a well positioned fulcrum, the rest is history.

C) Maybe jack up the wheel, not too high, load of car may be come off the wheel and bear on the jack, enough to loosen the nuts.

D) Con-saw, semtex?

hope it all works out

D) Force = Mass x Acceleration, big lad ( Mass ) with foot firmly on brace, good "bounce" ( Acceleration )
Straight in, no kissin'

WD did the trick - managed to source a long pipe just in case it didn't.

Currently running skinny spare and looking to replace torn Dunlop SP Sport 9000
