Dodgy engine temp needle

Postby TopCat » Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:56 am

Morning all.

Forgot to ask this at the meet, but for the last week or two, the needle on my engine temperature guage seems to have a split personality. Most of the time its fine, and reads just below middle (where I presume it should be :?: ), but every so often it goes a bit mad and starts flicking about all over the shop. It started as just a little twitch barely noticable, but seems to be getting worse, and now goes on for a few seconds at a time.

Anyone experience this before or have any suggestions as to what might be causing something like this?

Thanks guys,

T

Possibly loos connection if it is that intermittent! Have you had the dial cluster out at any stage. Take it out again and reseat. might solve your problem

That had been my own first though, but I hadn't done any work around the dials at that stage, so had ruled it out.
If there are no other thoughs/suggestions on it though, I might still follow up on that idea.
Thanks,

Try it first. It may very well be a faulty temp gauge

Hi guys, I'm back with this problem.
The engine temp guage is still acting up. I've noticed that under acceleration the temp goes to the normal position, slowing down it goes to zero, and under slight acceleration/coasting does its little dancy-around thing (I think thats the correct technical term  )
So, looks like a loose connection along the way. I've removed the dash and checked it, the wiring seems to be fine here. So I'm wondering could it be the sensor itself? And if so, could anyone point me to where this is actually located in the engine bay?
Of course, there's a good chance my guessing is completely wrong, so any other suggestions would be very welcome,

Cheers,

TC
