Locking cam pulleys

Postby blackwrx » Sun Jul 13, 2008 7:29 pm

I am going to change the timing belt later this week on a GPvR.
What do you use to lock the cam pulleys together?
I have read some people use woodworking spring clamps.
Other cars have special tools for this but I can't find any for the FTO.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Use large spring paper clips to hold the belt on each of the cams if you are doing the job on your own. You cannot as far as I am aware lock the cams on the fto. Also before you remove the old belt bring the engine around to line up the timing marks.

There are tools available for locking cams, not FTO specific and not particularly cheap. ASTtools or something like that do a tool IIRC

Edit - here they are http://www.asttools.co.uk/product_catalogue/multi-lock_ii/Product931.htm

No belt being changed before the engine goes in to replace shot motor. Doing it at moment for fto owner.

As belts go the FTO is not that bad, you dont even have to remove the engine mount.

Had a dual carb honda civic some years back and that was a female dog. Still miss that car though!

i'd say it's a whole load easier to do with the engine out!

Found a handy way of locking the cam pulleys together. You need and old belt to do it. You just cut a piece of the old belt and jam both sides of the pulleys together.
