MAN, the road are icy!!

Postby agent s » Tue Nov 22, 2005 12:06 pm

 Could have put skates on RussMan's FTO this morning! Poor guy did the decent thing and dropped me down to the luas only for his good deed to be thrown back in his face! soc will know... Car would turn around a corner in hs estate this morning & instead just slammed into the curb (nearly missing telephone pole :smt103 ) and knocked air out of his tyre & chunk out of alloy - ouch!

I helped by covering my eyes with my hands - a reaction that would have happened whether I was passenger or driver incidently!

Anyway, hope everyone's being careful & looking after their p&j really well

Ah That SUCKS!

Roads are pretty bad this morning alright..

I also noticed a tendency to drive 30kmph through fog banks with no lights on!..what is up with that??

Try driving on narrow country backroads in Co. Clare then - It was like "swan lake with an FTO" this morning for me. All my karting skills put to good use.

I have a feeling there'll be loads of Snow and Ice this winter..

Suits me.. I love messing about in snow.. Might do a "snowman of fire" this year if the weather permits.

Sucks for driving though - Irish roads are bad enough without the ice, slush & elderly people in the ditches.

Snow is fun but it really ain't no good if it only barely covers the roads cause then you have enough for crap driving conditions but not enough to ski the hills......

Word of warning for anyone who's ever used (or may in the future think about using) the air pump at the Texaco at Merrion Gates....

I filled up there a few days ago, set the pressure (it's one of those new electronic machines where you set the pressure and it keeps pumping until pressure is reached), filled the tyres and thought nothing of it........ until this morning that is

As I've been suffering the past few days with dodgy handling & very poor traction (orginally put it down to the cold weather + wet roads) this morning it was particularly bad so I had a closer look at my tyres - noticed the front 2 need replacing but also noticed they looked over-inflated. Dropped into a garage on the way to work and discovered the fronts were 36psi and the rears were 32psi  So dropped the pressures back to 30 (fr) and 28 (r) and now everything seems to be good again (tonight will be real taste test ;))

So what's the problem....? The fact I had originally set that damn electronic pump to put 32 (fr) and 30 (r) while it actually put in 36 and 32

So my advice - if you can double check your pressures in different garages....

Anyway, through all this I was suprised to learn the difference over-inflating by a couple of psi actually makes - with the adjusted (and correct) pressures the car rides better, has better feel through the steering (feels meatier) and feels grippier (although I'll confirm or deny that one later)....

I never rely on those garage gauges - always have a manual pressure gauge in the glovebox to check.

I drive on te back roads to and from work everyday..and as a result my front nearside tire is almost always at a lower pressure than the rest.

Pressure definately has a massive impact on handling & ride quality. No doubt about it.
