Postby peteport » Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:07 pm

hi guys,
doing up a shopping list for the gr, and am looking for recomendations

the engine has 202k kilometers on it and i dont know the history when things have been done. so i was planning on doing a full service, the belts and water pump.
should that cover all engine wise or is there anything else i should get sorted ?

after that im gonna tackle bushings cause they dont sound to good in the back.

Cheers Guys

New plugs would be a help, camskill are good for most bits.
Denso iridiums are what I'd go for...

I know you'll be doing an oil change but while you're at it you might as well change the gearbox oil too.

EDIT:

If you're doing the plugs do the gasket too as the rear head has to come off to change the plugs.

The rear head doesn't have to come off to change the plugs. You don't need a new rocker cover gasket.

If you are doing the timing belt, change the tensioner pulley too.
Yea, camskill do all the parts you require and are a lot cheaper then motor factors for most things.

The rear manifold (I call it head sorry) has to come off to change the rear bank of sparks.
And if you're doing a full service its recommended to change the rocker cover gasket as well. Mightn't have to do it but its recommended, if you're doing everything else then you might as well.

Marty, I have to disagree, I would only change the rocker cover gasket unless if theres evidence of a leak. Its worthwhile having a manifold gasket spare just in case the existing one tears when removing the manifold (touch wood I've never had to change one yet).

Fair enough, makes sense, but I have definately seen somewhere that the rocker cover gasket should be done as well as they wear with time, so if doing a full service that its just as handy to throw that on too while the plugs are being changed as they will only be taken out again to change the gasket if the gasket starts to leak in between services, thats my take on it anyway. Same reason as doing the waterpump same time as the belts, makes sense to do it then so you dont have to take off belts to change it when it does actually go.
I wouldnt have asked Mitsubishi to do it if I didnt see it somewhere cause I wouldnt have thought of it myself, I'm certain of that. But I'll take ye're knowledge on it, just saying I have seen it somewhere, so dont lash out now :D .
I'll be damned if I can find the blasted thing now though when I need it for back up! :)

I take your point, I'm a preventative maintenance type of guy myself, makse sense to change the gasket if you're so inclined. I've only ever done it once (on Aidos GPX, gasket was weeping slightly). Note that you'll also need liquid gasket seal. Its not a difficult job but its one of those things that I would put way down the list if its not currently leaking. I don't recollect it being listed as a service item on the interval list but I'll take your word for it.....
