Head wrecking ticking noise!

Postby Jasper » Wed Oct 21, 2009 8:41 pm

Hi,

I'm new to this, cool site. Have my '96 FTO GR for about 2 years now. Deadly car. Since I've had it there has been a constant ticking noise from the engine and when idle it gets louder and then decreases but never stops. It's been sitting up for the last year as the noise is so embarressing when stopped at lights. Brought it to a Mitsui dealer & they didn't want to know or just didn't know!! I would love to get it back on the road. Made the mistake of buying the car without researching. I know nothing about FTO's but would like to learn and really want to get this noise sorted. Any help would be appreciated (in lay-mans terms please!).

Cheers
J

Welcome along J.:smt006
I'm no expert but it sounds like it could be the tappets, do a search and you'll find loads of info and fixes.

I would have thought tappets too, but a Mitsi dealer would surely know what tappets are, unless its like you said and they just weren't interested. My tappets are playing up but they've never got to the point of being so loud that they're embarrassing so maybe its not them?

Does the noise stop when you turn the air fan off?

Couldn't be tappets if dealer said no surely?

Best thing would be if somebody from here could hear the noise... where are you based J?

Sorry haven't been online for a while. Cheers for the suggestions, when I originally brought it to the Mishi dealer he said he flushed the engine & said that might help, he admitted to me that he didn't like working on FTO's!! Will defo look into the tappets. I'm based in Leixlip/Dunboyne if anyone is near-by. Fair play, thanks again.

Sounds like tappets alright. unfortunately the only cure is fitting new ones.

They cost €296 plus postage form Camskill and it'll take a mechanic a good few hours to fit them. ~Better to get someone who has done them before.

I know he's adjusted tappets on MIVEC models, Pergau got his GR ones replaced by Paul before so he's deffo done them.
Would be worth getting a price from him.
