slow/weak wipers

Postby cmasterson » Thu Feb 18, 2010 9:53 am

Hello,

I've searched the forum and I can't find any topic on this, if there is one please link me.

My windscreen are incredibly slow and weak. Do I need to replace the motor or is there another solution?

Again, I apologise if this has already been covered,

thanks lads

It's quite possible that the passenger side wiper spindle has seized. happened on both my FTOs. I took it off, soaked it in brake cleaner then dipped it in WD40 for a day, turning the spindle every few hours to let the oil penetrate.

If you remove the scuttle panel and disconnect the linkages, see if the passenger wiper moves freely with the wiper not against the glass- if it doesn't then the spindle is seized.

It's possible that the motor is on the way out, but eliminate the other possible first.

make sure the battery is disconnected before doing anything with wiper linkage

I have a pair of spindles from an 02 Colt in the shed if you're stuck - I'm 90% sure they're a direct fit and given that they're 7 years newer from a 50,000 mile car they're probably in better condition.

hi i've just stumbled across this post and im sure you've sorted this by now but just incase you haven't i brought my seconed fto on wednesday and on thursday when it rained i found my wipers were stupidly slow and judered on the way back down so i decided to investigate why, im someone who when i find something wrong i need it fixed asap or its playing on my mind so when i got home thursday night i went back out on the drive and started to take it all apart at 10:30pm, anyway i started with the mechanism then the shafts but all was fine so i removed the wiper motor from the bulkhead and ripped it apart and cleaned the brushes and motor with sandpaper you only need to undo the 2 screews that hold the black body over the motor and carfully pull it off there will be some resistence as its being held by on by magnetism also mark what way round it is as if you refit it back the other way round the motor runs in reverse and the wipers wont stop in the right place anyway once apart carefully push each brush back one at a time and slide a bit of sandpaper down there and clean up the surface there are 3 to do, then slowly turn the motor and clean the surface the bushes touch then slot back togehter and hopefully that will cure it. It worked for me there now back to full speed.
