Two problems following engine swap.

Postby Wildhound » Mon Feb 04, 2008 11:53 am

Hey,

So I've now clocked up 500 miles since my engine swap and I've documented two rather irritating problems. The car still drives great which I'm delighted about, all things considered, but I want it back the way it was when I bought it!

First up I'm loosing fuel somewhere. I'm only getting about 18.5 mpg around the city (as opposed to 22 before the swap) and there's an occasional smell of fuel when stopped in traffic. Sometimes quite strong. It was only when I parked up in heavy rain above a drain one day that I noticed fuel was actually dripping out onto the road and being washed away. This only happens when the engine is running. Any ideas? Fuel injectors? Fuel pump? I haven't a clue. I haven't been able to track where the leak is coming from because it's not large enough to see the drips.

Secondly there's an odd clunk from the steering, but only when stationary and only when steering to the right almost to full lock. Usually I get three separate clunks as it approaches full lock. But only to the right. Going left there's not a sound. The steering is light and easy and appears to be perfect apart from the sound. I didn't touch the steering during the swap apart from replacing the old power steering pump which was damaged.

As always, cheers for any input guys.

The fuel problem is possibly the fuel injectors, I had this issue before, albeit on a GS, but basically where the injector sat into the fuel rail, there was an O ring giving it a seal, and this O ring was slightly damaged, causing fuel to escape....

As for the clunking steering, might be a spring not sitting right in the pan on the shock?

Both these issues are fixed.

The fuel leak was the result of the fuel filter somehow working itself lose. All it needed was a tighten.

The steering knock was caused by the two bolts above the hub on the front left hand side not being tightened properly. Oops!
