How quick does the neutral light flash?
I think twice per second means the oil is over heating and once per second means one of the components is gone... a few posts here

That sounds EXACTLY like what happened to me.

I got a 95GR, car felt underpowered and gearbox started to give in, and eventually it would get stuck in 3rd and just sit there, unless you turn off the ignition and start it up again.

Had to recon the whole box, cost me about £500 (This is in South Africa) - you might be able to get it cheaper here or a 2nd hand box. Other than that, I don't see why a could mechanic couldn't fix it.

Also, make sure to use Dextron III oil, nothing else.

Pity you just missed out on this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FTO-MANUAL-GEARBO ... dZViewItem

All that was needed to change to a manual box sold for 160GBP! - collection in UK only so you'd have had to arrange a courier. These usually sell for more like 800GBP.

If you want to consider a manual conversion (there have been loads of these done in the UK) then talk to someone like Ricerocket or Steelroe on here for a price on the kit.

Theres a very good write-up on the UK forum on this conversion - http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/viewtopic.ph ... conversion

BTW - A Manual Gearbox conversion will be more expensive than just replacing the TipBox but you'll have a quicker car with a better resale value.

Also if you are going to stay Tiptonic then if I were you I'd be looking into possible reasons for the wonky tip box - work on the diagnostics first - it could be as simple as a sensor.

There are loads of links for diagnostics on the tip box as mentioned above by SOC -

Depends on the price of the 2nd hand unit really - you could go arsing around with changing bits on the tip box and it still may not work. If the 2nd hand box is in good nick and cheap then it may be the way to go.

Mick check your private messages. I have several Tip boxes in stock, depends on how much your mechanic is gettting it for.

Mick, don't commit to anything until you've done a sensor check, it could be a lot simpler (and cheaper) than a gearbox swapout, search the forum for 'sensor', its come up a few times.

Just to add to the voices.... the guys are right - don't do anything until you get the sensors checked. I had a tip box go on my old GR and got a box from Steelroe at a very good price. But my symptoms were different - my car completely lost all drive - I'd definitely get a proper diagnostics done.

My sentiments exactl, i was talking to the mechanic and he had the box almost out at that stage. May very well be a sensor.
