hitting rev limit at 6000rmp & engine mgt light came on

Postby Speedyboy » Sat Jul 24, 2004 11:31 am

Hi,

Was driving my car this morning and it started acting really strange. I was overtaking and I seemed to reach what felt like the rev limit at 6000rpm. The car was warm so it should have had no problem.

I dropped a gear a few minutes later to see what would happen and it seemed like it was hitting the limiter or misfiring at about 6000rpm and then the engine management light came on. It was nearly like I lost a cylinder or something.

I turned the car off and started it again and the light had gone off but as soon as I revved it high it came back on again.

Has anyone had a similar problem or any idea what is wrong and how I could fix it.

Cheers
Ralph

Ive done a diagnostic on the car and 22 and 23 came up which is the
22 - crank angle sensor
23 - camshaft position sensor

Ive disconnected the battery and checked the wiring and that both sensors are in place and they both look fine. Took it for a decent test drive and its running perfect now?

Strange!

Belts snapping can take the sensor wires out, but it obviously isn't that or you'd know about it. Were you doing any work on the engine bay prior to the problem? Might be no harm in removing the camshaft case and taking a look at the condution of the cambelt, if its frayed, it may have impacted on the wiring.

The car let me down at 7.30am this morning in the middle of connemmara barely had phone coverage, Luckly I managed to find somewhere kinda safe to stop, Car was juddering and misfiring like mad so i presumed it was F$*cked, Rang the AA and my fiance to loan me a car she drove 100kms with a car I could use and the AA man arrived and re-connected the crank angle sensor

I couldnt belive it but its running perfectly now!

Was embarrassing but I was delighted there was no costly repairs

A huge thanks to Caroline for getting up and driving all that way and not complaining!!!
