FTO GX 1997 auto Stalls when slowing down

Postby colinclement » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:46 pm

Hi,

When going from 3rd to 2nd in automatic mode my car sometimes stalls. I mentioned this to an FTO supplier and he thought this would be the gear box but I have read that the stepper motor can also cause this probles. The revs do not seem erratic as suggested for this fault but just before it stalls the revs do drop. If I run in tiptronic mode it does not happen unless I don't change down when stopping.

I'm hoping that in a few days I will be able to know what circumstanced cause this problem if I am not hit up the back before then !

Any ideas.

Ps I'm from Gatwick Area in the uk but I have joined this forum as there seems to be some excellent technical experience over there. Also my mum is from Wexford !.

Cheers

Welcome Colin.
First I was going to ask how quick were you slowing down, as I find that if you come to too abrupt a stop the car will stall, it was the same in the Z I had, if stopping at lights or anything and I jammed on the brakes or stopped too quick without slowing down nice and easily the car would stall. When in tip mode it never does as you're bringing the gears down yourself.
The stepper motor might be the problem too, no harm in cleaning it regardless.

Hi, thanks for the reply, yes it seems to be when coming down from 5th, say over 40 mph to a relatively quick stop but I am not a racer if you know what I mean. As you say if just in traffic and starting and stopping it is fine. I am watching the rev counter and when it happens the revs are down to 200 - 300 but normally tick over is about 700-800. Do you know how I can increase the tick over. Last night when driving home I did the left foot on brake on right foot on accelerator trick and managed to control it but I do need a permanent fix so I can let my wife drive the car as it really is for her.

I apprechiate you help.

Cheers

Hi optical illusion

thanks you for the reply, you sound really certain about this ? Is this easy to fit ? i see it is about £120 for one.

cheers

Before you think about replacing it, clean it as Dragonheart suggested.
It's a five minute job and often suffices.

It's on the bottom right of the picture, just two bolts holding it IIRC.

Yes, I've had this problem. I should have been more clear - not replace simply clean! :D
