Very odd problem

Postby Sunburn » Wed Nov 17, 2010 3:51 pm

Hey guys, hoping some one can help,

1995 GPX

Ok, I have been having problems with my car stalling at the lights and stalling whilst changing gears.
This has nearly killed me a while back, I was going around a tight corner, and dropped a gear but missed the gear change, at which point engine stalled with no power steering I nearly went off the road.
I dont understand whats happening, can anyone advise...?

In addition to the above....
Im also getting some REV hunting whilst on stand-still, although this problem is intermittent and finally... this is very odd.
If I pump the brake pedal, my revs rise to about 1200, if i stop, the revs drop and the car stalls

Does anyone have any ideas what the hells going on?

Thanks guys.

Cheers for your fast replies, I know next to nothing when it comes to cars, but ill give the stepper motor cleaning guide a go, and see how I get on with that.
on a separate note, is the fuel filter easy to replace? if so is there a guide on this forum?

I think the car could do with a major service, ill start pricing up the parts.

Cheers all.

Stepper is easy - 10 minute job DIY

Fuel filter isn't quite so straightforward AFAIK. One for the mechanic unless you're handy and not afraid of engine work yourself.

Sounds exactly like the stepper motor. I had the exact same issue earlier this year. Cleaning it might work but if not you can pick up another one and it's a five minute job to swap it. Borrow one from another FTO owner if you need to test it but I'd bet the farm on the stepper here.

I concur. If you're gonna be playing around with the stepper it might be worth your while to take off the throttle body and give it a clean too. It's the thing directly above the stepper motor. Take off the intake and open the buttlerfly valve with your finger of the throttle cable and give it a good clean.
