As long as it's had regular servicing and oil changes it shouldn't be a problem. Finding out if this has been done is the tricky part.

buy with your brain. listen out for any knocking noises, ask about any major jobs that have been done, e.g timing belt, clutch, suspension parts etc.

FTOs are very well built, but to be fair, even on a car with 100000km there's still plenty of questions to be asking the owner about the service history.

Put simply, I'd be as happy with an 200k FTO with proof of a proper maintainance schedule as I'd be with a 120k car that had no Irish service history

Mines 185k '95, not a bother. But it was looked after reasonably well I'm told.

The milage itself isn't really that important if the car is well looked after and runs well.

So like the others have already pointed out check for service history.
If you're not mechanically inclined find somebody who is and get them to check the car for you - if possible get a mechanic to go over the the car for you.. Remember though it might set you back a few quid now the cost of buying a lemon could far outweigh that.

For what it's worth my 95 has 150k and a bit on it...BUT I've replaced the engine, so the shell has 150k but the engine has 55k or so...

You're dead right to do the homework, and almost everyone here will tell you proper maintainence is the key.
You're in the dublin area, and I'm not making promises for other people, but I'd say if you were going to look at a car you are interested in, you could prossibly get someone familar with FTO's to go with you for a second opinion.

My advice would be to test drive a couple of them if you can - it's a lot easier to recognise a bad one from a good one once you know what a good one looks and feels like.

If you can get to a meet in advance that will give you a great sense for the definition of good condition and cared for FTOs.
