Pop-up headlight conversion?

Postby colm_mcm » Wed May 21, 2008 10:04 am

Been thinking about this one for a while, don't know how viable it is,
getting the pop up headlight mechanism from a MX-5 or MR2 and adapting it to fit an FTO,
I presume you could use the existing plastic lenses as the caps, and that space is more limited around the FTO's headlight area than on the MR or MX.
You'd probably have to make up your own light unit, and have the lights only pop up a small bit.
could look cool?

yikes. sound slike serious work because there is not much room behind the lamps at all. especially if you have a HID ballast. might be more work than its worth. besides the FTO standard lamps look the busienss :D

Pop up lights are a subjective choice really, I know a lof of the guys with RX-7s change to sleek headlight kits to modernise the front profile of the car (IIRC, pop up lights were banned some years ago on safety grounds, something to do with light units dislogding in a crash or somthing).

Personally, I woudn't touch the front light clusters, for me, the FTOs lights are one of the more prominent defining characterisics of the car that screams 'I'm an FTO!'

Agree with above. They suit some cars but like the Rex 7 I think they're nicer with flash lights.

It would look too much like a Ford Probe for my liking.

Leave well enough alone - better to put some angel eyes in the standard unit.

I don't think I'll be taking mine apart just yet! A black cap (if that's the word) would retain the regular look of the FTO when the lights are closed. it'd just be something different.

I agree that the headlight is one of the nicest bits of styling on the car.
